Two sides with historical struggles at this stage of major European competitions meet on matchday one of the UEFA Conference League when Hearts host Nordsjælland.

Match News and Current Form

Hearts fired in five goals over the weekend as their 5-0 win over St Mirren snapped a two-game winless run (D1, L1) ahead of this Conference League opener. The disappointment of missing out on the Scottish Premiership title on the final day of last season doesn’t seem to be weighing too heavily on the Jam Tarts, who have only lost one of their last 12 competitive games (W8, D3). Hearts are amongst the early frontrunners in the Scottish top flight once more, but Europe has represented a bigger stumbling block as they have failed to ever progress from their three prior appearances at a major European group stage/league phase, with their failure to win any of their last five home matches in Europe (D3, L2) the major reason behind that.

Nordsjælland had to do it the hard way to reach this stage, coming through three Conference League qualifying rounds to reach the main draw for the first time since 2023/24. Losing just one of their last five games in major European competition (W3, D1) is a positive omen they can cling to, and they may be glad of the domestic respite given their Danish Superliga campaign has stalled across the last five rounds (W1, D2, L2). Like their hosts, Nordsjælland have negative history to overcome here having exited at the first stage in their last four appearances in major European competition, and having lost their first away game in all four instances, avoiding defeat here could hold the key to making history.

Head-to-Head History

These sides have never met before, with Hearts’ only prior engagement with Danish opposition in major European competition seeing them go down 2-0 to Copenhagen two seasons ago. Nordsjælland beat Scottish side Queen of the South home and away in a pair of UEFA Cup qualifiers in 2008/09.

Hot Stats and Streaks

Hearts have scored 2+ goals in each of their last five home games.

Eight of Hearts’ last ten competitive matches produced over 2.5 goals (excluding extra time).

Only one of Nordsjælland’s last five European away games saw both teams score.

Five of Nordsjælland’s last six away matches produced over 2.5 goals.

Key Players to Watch and Missing Players

Hearts’ Laurent Mendy has made a team-high 14 fouls in the Scottish Premiership this season without picking up a single yellow card! Hjalte Rasmussen could be someone to watch in the closing stages having scored four of his last five Nordsjælland goals after the 70th minute.

Blair Spittal has missed out on Hearts’ European squad due to a long-term injury while Villum Berthelsen picked up a knock for Nordsjælland at the weekend.

Betting Analysis

Picking a winner here is difficult to call, so a punt on over 2.5 goals may be a safer route to take.
