Carlos Alcaraz eyes first European indoor swing title as Alex de Minaur chases elusive win
Match News & Form
Carlos Alcaraz’s serve has looked extremely vulnerable since he returned from his wrist injury, and it was no different in the Vienna semi-final, where he faced four break points and dropped serve twice. Unlike most of his recent outings, though, he had plenty of positives to take from this one, as the win came against an in-form Daniil Medvedev, arguably the best performer on tour since the start of the Asian swing.
The win also gives Alcaraz a platform to claim his first career title during the European indoor swing, a part of the season in which he has underperformed so far. This is, in fact, his first final at this stage of the year.
Alex de Minaur could hardly have scripted a better week in Vienna. After falling in the semi-finals here in both 2024 and 2025, he has finally broken through to the final, his fourth of the season. The win that got him there made it all the sweeter: a three-set victory over soon-to-be world No. 1 Alexander Zverev, which is only his fourth win over a top-2 opponent in 20 attempts.
Above all, the run has given his ATP Finals hopes a huge lift. With several Turin rivals both above and below him suffering early exits this week, he has fully capitalised on their slip-ups. He has moved one point ahead of Rafael Jodar into eighth, the final qualifying spot, meaning his fate will be in his own hands when he heads to the Paris Masters next week.
Head-to-Head: Carlos Alcaraz leads 6-0
This has been a very comfortable matchup for Alcaraz over the years. He has won all six of their meetings, four of them in straight sets.
Stats & Facts
Alex de Minaur holds an 11-13 record in tour-level finals, including 1-2 this year.
De Minaur is unbeaten on indoor hard courts this year, having won the title at his only previous indoor event, in Rotterdam in February.
Carlos Alcaraz has won just one indoor ATP title in his hugely successful career, beating Alex de Minaur in the 2025 Rotterdam final.
Alcaraz has won nine of his last 12 tour-level finals, and all three defeats came against the same opponent, Jannik Sinner.
Betting Analysis
Alex de Minaur has suffered so many demoralising defeats against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz that he sometimes looks beaten before he even steps on court. He has been desperate to turn the tide against one of them, and this could be one of the best chances he gets. Alcaraz keeps winning most of his matches, but he is in a vulnerable phase after his recent return from injury, with a couple of uncharacteristic losses and a shaky serve.
Even so, beating Alcaraz will require a huge mental effort from de Minaur, given his long-standing habit of losing these kinds of matches. The nature of those defeats makes him difficult to trust here, even with the Spaniard below his best.
