The Reds stated that there is no timetable for Greene's return until his trip to Los Angeles to receive another evaluation from orthopedist Neal ElAttrache.
Greene had reported feeling soreness during a between-starts bullpen session on Tuesday, resulting in an MRI occurring on Wednesday morning. The Reds' president Nick Krall did not reveal the results of the scan.
"I'm not going to get into that until we have the other doctor's opinion on that," Krall said.
In five MLB seasons, this is the seventh time Greene has been placed on the injured list. Unfortunately for Greene, who turns 27 on Thursday, he has yet to complete a full season between IL placements. He made the All-Star selection in 2024 after having 24 starts, the most he has had so far in his big-league career.
Krall and Greene met on Wednesday ahead of being placed on the IL, alongside general manager Brad Meador, manager Terry Francona, and head trainer Sean McQueeney.
"It's tough," Krall descibes. "He's had a couple elbow things this season. He's had some other stuff throughout the last couple seasons. We know we're going to get him on the right track, and get him back, and hopefully he'll be in games sooner rather than later.
"But whatever happens, we've just got to support him and do whatever we can do for him."
So far in 2026, Greene is 2-2 as a starter, with a 6.83 across five starts. His best performance came in a 12-strikeout, one walk performance againast the Chicago Cubs on July 10 where he had kept seven scoreless innings.
In his most recent start, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 31, Greene let in four runs from six innings of action. Two of the runs came in the first inning following mistakes - one of which included him not covering first base fast enough in what would have been the third out of the inning.
The Reds, currently holding a record of 54-58, were set to have their full complement of starters within the next few weeks as Nick Lodolo is nearing his return from a blister. However, that does not seem likely now. The last time their full rotation was fully fit was for a week last month.
"It's unfortunate. But it's unfortunate for him," Krall pointed out. "He's going through this. Hopefully, everything's going to be OK for him."
During the MLB trade deadline, Cincinnati had offers for Greene, but were unable to get a deal across.
Greene had signed a six-year, $53 million contract in early 2023, with two more guaranteed years remaining at $15 million and $16 million. A club option is available in 2029 for $21 million ($2 million buyout).
As a result of the injury, Krall said that left-hander Andrew Abbott is likely to move up a spot in the rotation to start Wednesday's game versus the Athletics.
