The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Boston Bruins 3-1 in Game 3 on Thursday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon made 24 saves in his first start of the playoffs.

The series will remain in Boston for Game 4 as the Bruins will look to even things up. Teams that start at home in the first round to take a 2-1 lead in the series advance to the next round 74% of the time.

Recap & Highlights

Despite both teams combining for 14 shots on goal and two power plays each, neither found the back of the net to keep the first period scoreless.

It wouldn't be until 3:16 into the second period that Tanner Jeannot scored his first career playoff goal to put the Bruins up 1-0.

Following a Morgan Geekie high-sticking, the Sabres went on their third power play of the game and failed yet again, making it 0-for-12 on the series.

Boston would have a crucial opportunity to make it a two-goal lead after Viktor Arvidsson was awarded a penalty shot. After missing, Lyon became just the second goaltender (Dominik Hasek) in Sabres playoff history to deny a penalty shot.

Then, the Sabres decided to strike back shortly after.

Bowen Byram would score his second goal of the playoffs to make it 1-1.

They would go on another power play, their fourth of the game, and failed to convert again, making it 0 for their last 13.

Four minutes into the third period, Buffalo would take the lead for the first time in the game.

Alex Tuch scored his second goal of the playoffs to put the Sabres up 2-1

The Sabres have now scored seven of their last eight goals throughout this series in the final frame, making it the most of any of the teams in the playoffs.

Boston had back-to-back power play opportunities following Tuch's goal in the third, but couldn't find the net.

After going empty-net, Boston would give up their third goal of the game, this time to Noah Ostlund for his first of the playoffs as Buffalo took a 2-1 series lead.

Both teams would combine 0-for-8 on the power play in Game 3 as the series will remain in Boston for Game 4.

Buffalo outshot (28-25) and outhit Boston (35-33), while both almost split on face-offs (51%-49%).
