The 52-year-old has been in head coaching positions for a consistent period of almost two decades, first taking over the New South Wales state men's team three years after ending what was a 90-game playing career for Queensland and Victoria.
Mott is best known for his seven-year stint in charge of Australia's women's 'golden generation', winning two T20 Women's World Cups (2018, 2020) and one ODI Women's World Cup (2022) before taking up the England men's white ball head coaching role in 2022 when England decided to split the coaching positions.
Mott's first triumph in charge of England came just five months into his tenure when they won the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, defeating Pakistan in the final.
Their poor performance at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which almost saw them miss qualification for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, was the long road towards the end for Mott, who left the position in mid-2024 after England reached the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
He worked under previous head coach Greg Shipperd in the men's setup and is currently leading the Manchester Super Giants women's team in England's Hundred franchise tournament whilst consulting for Lancashire's Vitality Blast side.
Mott said he was "disappointed" not to also be leading the Sixers women's team in a dual-role capacity.
"I've been part of the Sixers family for a long time, so to have the opportunity to step into the BBL Head Coach role is something I'm incredibly excited about," Mott explained on Wednesday.
"This is a club with a proud history and a winning culture, and I'm looking forward to building on the foundations that have been established over many seasons. Having worked closely with the men's program, I've seen first-hand the talent and potential within this playing group.
"I'm incredibly grateful for my time with the women's program and wish Ash (Gardner), the players and support staff all the very best for WBBL12."
Sydney Sixers GM Rachael Haynes told media that the potential for BBL and WBBL windows to move around the calendar in future seasons was the main reason for discontinuing Mott's role in the women's program.
"Since joining the Sixers, Matthew has made a significant impact across both our men's and women's programs, with his leadership, cricket knowledge and ability to build strong team cultures, making him an invaluable part of our organisation," Haynes said.
"With the potential for the BBL and WBBL windows to shift each season, we have appointed separate head coaches for each team to ensure continuity and long-term stability across both programs. While we considered Matthew's ability to lead both programs, we've taken a long-term view to ensure consistent and stable leadership across both teams.
"The strength of the candidate we have appointed as WBBL Head Coach gave us confidence that this was the right move for both programs, and we look forward to announcing that news in the coming days."
