Switzerland goalscorer Dan Ndoye was happy that his side broke an 88-year wait for a knockout win at a World Cup, but insisted his side wanted more after their 2-0 victory over Algeria on Wednesday in Vancouver.

The Nottingham Forest forward scored straight after the restart for the second half with a crisp right-footed finish after Breel Embolo had opened the scoring on 10 minutes, thanks to the work of Johan Manzambi.

The win that took them into the round of 16, where they will face either Ghana or Colombia in BC Place on July 7th, and Ndoye knows his team are chasing far more at this World Cup.

Speaking after the game in the mixed zone to Flashscore and other assorted media, he said: “I think today we wrote one page of history, but we want more, and we work for more. I think we showed that we are a strong team, and now we have to show it in the next game."

Ndoye's goal in the 46th minute broke a barren run of three games for the winger. Whilst Ruben Vargas, Manzambi and Embolo have been stealing the limelight, he has persevered and was rewarded on Wednesday.

"The last few weeks have not been easy for me," he admitted. "It was not what I was expecting since the first game of the group stage, but my mentality is to always work and help the team, and I continue to work even when I am not at my best, and I want to continue because I know I can do it even better."

As part of a front four for Switzerland, Ndoye and company were threatening on the break, and could have won by a larger margin.

Speaking about the aforementioned quartet, he explained: "We have worked a lot in training to find this fluidity. When you find it in the game, it's the most important. Today, we found it, and we have to continue to find it in the other games."

The brightest spark on the pitch was Manzambi. His assist for the first goal showed a star in the making, and his teammate was glowing when describing the Swiss number nine.

Ndoye remarked: "What he's doing at his age is incredible. He's an incredible player for us, and he helps us to go to the next step... He makes us so much better, and we are really happy to have him in the team."

Embolo was also complimentary of the 20-year-old, saying after the game: "I think 95% of the goal (Embolo's in the 10th minute) is Johan's. The way he pulled up the ball, it was an easy goal for me.

"I am not only happy for him, but I'm also happy for Dan, too. He had a, not a difficult week, but as a striker, when you have a lot of chances, and you don't score, you see everyone scoring left and right, you can get a little bit down, but Dan is a hard worker, and today he got the goal."

Switzerland now have five days to recover and prepare ahead of their round of 16 back at BC Place on July 7th.
