SC Magdeburg’s handball team took a vital step towards defending their Champions League title when joined Füchse Berlin in the Final Four on Thursday evening. After a convincing win in the first leg against Pick Szeged (35-28), coach Bennet Wiegert’s team showed no weakness in the quarter-final second leg either, winning 45-37 (23-19). SCM now dreams of a fourth title in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

On Thursday evening, their progression was never in doubt. In front of their home fans, Magdeburg put on an attacking display, with Omar Ingi Magnusson as the leading goalscorer with eight goals.

"Getting a win like this in the Champions League is never easy," said backcourt player Manuel Zehnder. Heading to Cologne is "a really great feeling." The home side started focused, quickly pulling ahead by three goals (7th minute), and as the game went on, they delivered more and more highlights. After the break, Magdeburg kept up the pressure and extended their lead even further.

Knorr is also in the Final Four

On Wednesday evening, Füchse booked their ticket to the final tournament in Cologne after a dramatic thriller against Veszprem HC from Hungary, winning 35-33 (31-30, 17-15) after a penalty shootout. Joining them at the showdown on 13-14 June in the Lanxess Arena will be Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona and Aalborg HB from Denmark, featuring national team player Juri Knorr.

The semi-final pairings will be drawn on Friday at 11 a.m. Last year, Magdeburg defeated Füchse Berlin last year in the final to claim their third title after 2002 and 2023. Now, they have a chance to defend their title, something no German team has achieved before.
