Finland's wait for a first World Handball Championship appearance since 1958 goes on after they were beaten 30-26 by Montenegro in Podgorica, giving the Balkan side a 66-58 aggregate victory.

Coming into the qualification round two tie as the underdogs, the damage was done when Finland were beaten 36-32 at home in Vantaa three nights earlier and therefore needed to go to the Montenegrin capital and win by at least four goals.

The Finns began brightly, taking a 2-0 lead, but that was as good as it got and the visitors wouldn't hold the lead again after their 3-2 advantage was wiped out.

They at least prevented Montenegro from pulling away, as the hosts never put more than a three-goal streak together in the first half. The home side's biggest lead in the first 30 minutes was 16-12, which Finland cut by one goal just before the half-time buzzer.

The second half saw more of the same, as Montenegro kept chipping away to extend their advantage without a period of dominance, again putting together just one 3-0 run which gave them their biggest lead of the match, seven goals.

A 4-1 run to finish the match restored some Finnish pride, as Ola Lindgren's men fell to their second four-goal loss of the week, 30-26.

Both sides shared the scoring around, as Miska Henriksson and Benjamin Helander scored four each for Finland - the latter with a 100% shooting rate - while three players; Milos Vujovic, Stefan Cavor and Radojica Cepic, scored five each for Montenegro.

With their 66-58 aggregate win, the Adriatic side move onto the third and final round of European qualification, where they will face Slovenia in a two-legged tie in May for a place in Germany.
