SC Magdeburg kept Füchse Berlin from achieving a Super Cup hat-trick as the German handball champions won the clash against the cup winners, who had triumphed in the season opener for the past two years, with a comfortable 38-31 (20-15) victory, laying the foundation for another successful season just five days before the new Bundesliga campaign begins.

For coach Benny Wiegert, who has been on the sidelines in Magdeburg since 2015, it was his first victory as a coach at the traditional season opener in his fourth attempt. At Magdeburg's last Super Cup triumph 25 years ago, the now 44-year-old was still playing for Magdeburg himself. This time, Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson led the champions to victory as leading goalscorer with nine goals.

"I'm really happy, because we've often stood here and couldn't win this thing for 25 years. That's why it feels damn good right now," said Wiegert on Dyn. "I think passion and attitude were absolutely there for us today." Match-winner Kristjansson elaborated on the win: "We made very few mistakes in this game and were very confident in all areas." The match gives "great anticipation for what's to come."

Gidsel Keeps Füchse in the Game

Thanks to their win, Magdeburg immediately underlined their title ambitions for the coming season. Magdeburg's goalkeeper Matej Mandic, the Croatian, especially shone in the first 20 minutes with several strong saves. In the end, the Fuchse had world handball player Mathias Gidsel to thank for going into halftime with "only" a five-goal deficit against Magdeburg. The Dane scored seven goals in the first 30 minutes.

But after the break, even the difference-maker became increasingly powerless. Magdeburg consistently kept Fuchse at bay, and when Felix Claar scored to make it 30-21 just over 40 minutes in, the game was virtually decided.
