Rayo Vallecano's return to Vallecas was overshadowed by a protest from some fans that ultimately led to the match being suspended. Rayo had been playing in exile at Butarque because their stadium was in poor condition. When the team returned to the neighbourhood, they managed to do so for barely 20 minutes.

It was clear that the return of Rayo to Vallecas was not going to be a peaceful one - the team had to wait until October to play at home. Unhappy with the situation, the fans used the match to make their feelings known.

A group of supporters threw paper aeroplanes and rubber balls onto the Vallecas pitch during the 13th minute of the match against Athletic Club.

The objects being thrown led to the temporary suspension of the match. In the 24th minute, the referee decided to restart the match. However, the same section of fans, in the only end at Vallecas, began throwing objects again.

The referee tried to wait as long as possible. He met with the authorities present, the captains and the two coaches before deciding to suspend the match.

It remains to be seen when the match will resume. Athletic, who are not playing in European competition this season, also have a postponed fixture vs Levante to play. Heavy rain in Valencia called it off, and it is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st.
