Jonas Vingegaard on Saturday claimed his fifth stage win in the Giro d'Italia to underline his top position in the overall standings as he arrived solo at the summit of Piancavallo on the 20th stage of the prestigious Grand Tour race.

Vingegaard once again proved that he is in a league of his own when he completed the final 10 kilometers of the Piancavallo solo to claim his fifth stage win of this year's Giro d'Italia.

Only a crash on the final flat stage into Rome tomorrow will prevent Vingegaard from being crowned champion of the Giro d'Italia as the first Danish rider in history.

Should he manage to claim the overall win tomorrow, he will become the first rider since Chris Froome in 2018 to win all three grand tours following his Vuelta a España win last year and his Tour de France wins in 2022 and 2023.

Vingegaard, who came into the stage four minutes and three seconds ahead of second-placed Felix Gall in the general classification, was happy to ride safely ‌in the peloton for the first two-thirds of the stage between two Visma-Lease a Bike teammates, before launching his attack in the final 10 kilometres (6.21 miles).

Gall tried to chase Vingegaard down during the attack, but the leader pulled more ‌than a minute ahead going into the final five kilometres, ‌and secured a sensational solo victory, a minute and 15 seconds ahead of second-placed Gall.

Austrian Gall finished second, as local favourite Giulio Ciccone completed the podium.

"I am a cyclist, and I like to win. I want to win as many races as possible, and we decided to go for it again today because it was the last chance in the mountains", said Vingegaard in the post-race interview.

"Today, everything had to be decided, and we decided to go all in on the stage. The boys did great again today, and I had a great day. To win five stages here in the race and have a solid lead going into tomorrow is special for me".

"We had to improvise a bit, because Sepp Kuss said he didn't have his best day, but Bart Lemmen did fantastic and set a very high speed at the bottom. The plan was to attack later, but we had to change the plans a little, and so I had to attack earlier", said Vingegaard
