German Police are on red alert in connection with the high-risk "Elb-Clásico" derby between 1. FC Magdeburg and Dynamo Dresden, set to be played on Sunday at the Rudolf Harbig Stadion in Dresden.

In January, at least 70 police officers were injured in violent incidents surrounding the clash as officers were targeted with pyrotechnics, barriers and stones and also attacked with paving stones and a manhole cover by Magdeburg fans outside the stadium during the half-time break.

State prosecutors subsequently launched attempted murder charges against a 29-year-old individual involved in attacking law enforcement with cobblestones, while a €186,600 fine was imposed on Magdeburg and a partial stadium stand closure was also brought into effect.

The rivalry between 1. FC Magdeburg and SG Dynamo Dresden - often called the 'Elb-Clasico' stems from their dominance and fierce rivalry in the DDR-Oberliga (the top division of East Germany) during the 1970s and 1980s.

Both clubs positioned themselves as heavyweights in the former GDR. Dynamo Dresden won eight Oberliga titles, while Magdeburg was a major force (and famously the only East German club to win a European trophy, taking the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1974). The two clubs, which are 226 kilometres apart, frequently fought directly against each other for league championships and honours, which led to a fierce rivalry.

During their glorious days, Magdeburg built a renowned youth academy that heavily supplied the East German national team (including players like Jurgen Sparwasser, who famously scored the winner against West Germany at the 1974 World Cup).

Dresden, on the other hand, was backed heavily by the Stasi regime, creating a fierce sporting tension between the two regional flagships.

Sunday's occasion will add another layer of intensity to an already important fixture. The derby will mark the 80th meeting between the two clubs, and the Elb-Clasico promises a charged atmosphere as Thomas Stamm's Dresden attempt to halt their slide towards the relegation zone, and Petrik Sander's Magdeburg look to strengthen their position in the promotion race.

Magdeburg are currently fourth in the table while Dynamo Dresden are second from bottom.

The two sides will face each other at the Rudolf Harbig Stadion in Dresden at 13.30 CET on Sunday.
