However, against the Walia Ibex, Senegal needed only 11 minutes to take the lead. Nicolas Jackson provided the pass for Ibrahim Mbaye, who found the back of the net.
This opening goal rewarded the Senegalese side's strong start, as they almost doubled their lead through Pape Gueye in the 23rd minute but he missed from close range.
Ethiopia almost caught Senegal twice following defensive mistakes but the Lions of Teranga held on for a 1-0 half-time lead.
The second half did not produce a goal as Senegal failed to come up with a meaningful opportunity.
Jackson was withdrawn in the closing stages, with Pape Moussa Fall introduced in the 89th minute, before Mbaye also made way in stoppage time.
Despite the win, Senegal remained second in Group J behind Mozambique, who hammered Sudan 4-1 to move to four points.
The Mambas took the lead in the 24th minute through Witi before Chamito doubled the advantage almost immediately after the restart.
Guima made it 3-0 in the 58th minute before Chamito struck again four minutes later to complete his double and give the hosts a commanding four-goal advantage.
Zico opens floodgate of goals
In Group B, Egypt without captain Mohamed Salah hammered South Sudan 5-0 at the Juba National Stadium in Juba.
Mostafa Zico opened the floodgate of goals for the Pharaohs in the 36th minute before Omar Marmoush added the second in the 49th minute.
Ibrahim Adel, who had been subbed on, scored the third for the marauding Egypt side in the 75th minute before Marmoush squeezed in the fourth, and Hamza Abdelkarim rounded off the emphatic victory.
Egypt are topping the group with four points, followed by Malawi, who have three points from one game, and Angola third with one point while South Sudan have zero points.
Morocco make it two out of two
In Group A, Morocco registered a 2-0 win against Lesotho to make it two wins out of the two. The Atlas Lions had won their matchday one 2-0 against Gabon.
Against Likuena, Brahim Diaz broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, before Azzedine Ounahi made it 2-0 in the 82nd minutes.
Morocco have six points while Lesotho remained without a point after successive defeats, having gone down 2-1 against Niger in their first match.
In Group G, Comoros secured victory against Namibia to register their first of the qualification campaign.
Comoros, who had lost 3-1 against Cameroon, scored through Benjaloud Youssouf in the 54th minute to down the Brave Warriors.
The result left Comoros, Namibia and Cameroon on three points each, with the Indomitable Lions set to face Congo.
