Tonda Eckert could face lengthy ban if Southampton found guilty in 'Spygate' scandal

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert could face a ban from the sport if charges of spying on rivals Middlesbrough are upheld.

The Saints have been charged with breaching rule 127, making it an offence to observe another club's training session 72 hours before a match between the two teams. 

Footballing authorities are assessing the outcome of the case against Southampton after intern analyst William Salt was pictured filming Boro's training session, just 48 hours before the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final. 

An investigation will determine whether any senior figures commissioned, encouraged or participated in spying activities, and according to The Times, Eckert could face a similar punishment to Bev Priestman. 

Two years ago, the Canadian Women's head coach was banned from football for a year after a spying scandal at the Paris Olympics. 

Eckert could, therefore, face a ban from the sport if the charges are upheld, with a points deduction being the likely outcome for Southampton, irrespective of what division they're in.
