Flashscore sources: Man Utd consider longer-term striker plans amid Calvert-Lewin link

Manchester United are beginning to question whether they need to rethink their plans at centre-forward, with Benjamin Sesko's latest injury layoff raising fresh concerns about the depth of their attacking options.

Sesko is expected to remain sidelined until at least January as he works his way back from a shin injury, leaving United without a striker they had hoped would become a central figure in their season.

The 23-year-old also missed two short periods last season with knee and shin problems, and there is growing awareness that his availability moving forwards must be considered alongside his potential when United assess their future at No.9.

The initial expectation was that United would look for a forward in January who could provide support and help them through the remainder of the campaign.

However, the thinking is beginning to evolve, with sources indicating that a more substantial investment is not unthinkable if the right opportunity emerges.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one name that is being reported as a target United could consider, although a move for the Leeds United striker is viewed as relatively unlikely.

The rivalry between the clubs and the rarity of transfers between them would make any deal seem difficult - particularly in Man Utd's current state.

His name nevertheless provides an indication of the calibre of signing United may be prepared to explore, rather than simply pursuing a short-term solution to cover Sesko's absence.

Sesko is on course to return in January, but getting back to full match sharpness will take time. That is particularly frustrating given he had only just started to find his rhythm before the latest injury interrupted his progress.

Sources say the striker is determined to return to full fitness and show that his United career can develop into something far more successful.

There is no suggestion that the club have given up on him, but his absences are becoming part of the wider recruitment discussion.

United are struggling for consistent firepower and must decide whether another temporary addition will be enough.
