Man United host Brentford on Monday night in a game which is vital to both teams' European aspirations.

The Red Devils can pull three points clear of Liverpool, but more importantly, 11 points clear of Brighton, who are currently sitting in the Europa League qualification place.

United on the cusp of UCL qualification

It would mean the Seagulls having to win all four of their remaining games and United to lose theirs, assuming Liverpool and Aston Villa also won at least once, to stop Michael Carrick from leading his team into next season's Champions League.

Having lost last season's Europa League final to Tottenham, scarcely could the direction of the two teams competing in that match be more polar opposites.

Brentford are themselves on the cusp of a maiden European campaign after 134 years, with Keith Andrews guiding his side into ninth position at the start of play.

That puts the Bees just two points behind Brighton, and only one behind Bournemouth, who would play in the Conference League if they remain in seventh place by the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Brentford unbeaten in six

The West Londoners are unbeaten in six league games, with their last five all being draws, whilst United have lost two of their last five, winning two and drawing the other.

Intriguingly, Brentford have scored at least three times against the Red Devils in the last two games, winning 3-1 at the GTech Community Stadium in the reverse fixture earlier this season, and 4-3 at the same venue last season.

On their last visit to Old Trafford in October 2024, however, they went down 2-1.

Those two defeats were more than the Red Devils had lost in the previous 11 meetings (W8, D2, L1), and if Brentford were to do the double over them, it would be the first time they'd managed the feat since the 1936/37 campaign.

They'll have to work hard to keep out the hosts, given that United's current 21-game scoring run is the most consecutive games they've managed to find the net in since Sir Alex Ferguson's final season at the club in 2012/13, when they scored in 23 successive matches.

Players looking to make history

It's also been almost a year since they've lost consecutive home matches, though Brentford haven't been behind for a single minute in the last six Premier League games, since losing 2-0 to Brighton in February.

Ahead of the match, both teams have a player looking to create history this season, and for entirely different reasons.

Caoimhin Kelleher has managed to keep nine clean sheets so far for the Bees this season, with Shay Given being the last Republic of Ireland goalkeeper to reach double figures when he managed 10 for Man City in the 2009/10 season.

Bruno Fernandes has long been United's talisman and currently has 18 assists to his name.

With five games left of the current campaign, including this one, he has a chance to equal or even beat Mesut Ozil's 2015/16 total of 19, or the record (20) held by both Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20) and Thierry Henry (2002/03).

Goals virtually guaranteed

Carrick will look to ensure that his team learn from their win over Chelsea when, despite the 1-0 victory, they only had four attempts at goal compared to 21 from the Blues - their biggest shot deficit in a Premier League game since April 2024 against Liverpool (19).

With both teams having let in 45 and 44 goals respectively in the league this season, too, another high-scoring encounter isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Igor Thiago is a clear threat to the hosts with 21 goals already to his name, whilst former Brentford man, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko are joint top-scorers for the Red Devils this season with nine goals each.

Thiago has also had the most total shots for his team (76) in 25/26, and the most on target (39).

Matheus Cunha's total of 78, of which 32 were on target, mark him out as a player to watch, particularly if Bruno can pick him out as he did at Chelsea.

Game could be decided late on

Aside from his total of assists, the Portuguese has created 109 chances, and has also made the most passes in the team (1,742).

With 516 total shots collectively, United have had the second most in the Premier League this season, and their 188 on target is better than all of the other 19 teams in the division. 58 goals scored have only been bettered by Arsenal and Man City, too.

The final 15 minutes have the potential to be the most exciting part of the match, given that the Red Devils have both scored their most (14) and conceded their most goals (13) in that period of the game, as have the Bees (16 scored and 14 conceded).

Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu miss out again for the hosts, whilst Leny Yoro will face a late fitness test, and Lisandro Martinez is suspended.

Jordan Henderson will be a huge miss for the visitors, whilst Vitaly Janelt, Rico Henry and Fabio Carvalho are also out.
