National team captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg dropped a real bombshell last night after the Danes had just lost 2–3 to Scandinavian rivals Norway in the Nations League.
Once again, Hojbjerg had delivered a poor performance in midfield alongside his partner, Morten Hjulmand—a constellation Hojbjerg admits isn't working.
"The elephant in the room is, to some extent, that you have two players of the same type in midfield. Perhaps the coach needs to choose one and bench the other; ultimately, we have to think about what’s best for the team rather than ourselves. I’m certainly not above that," he told the Danish media.
He was also asked whether he had discussed the matter with national team coach Brian Riemer. He hasn't, but he believes it is clear that the current setup isn't working.
"It’s not up to me to decide who plays. But you can see that it isn't working and that it feels a bit awkward," the Dane remarked candidly.
The question now is whether Riemer will alter his midfield trio, which in recent matches has consisted of Morten Hjulmand, Hojbjerg, and Victor Froholdt.
Denmark faces Wales on Sunday in their next Nations League match.
