Jose Mourinho believes Portugal have what it takes to emerge as one of the standout teams at this summer’s World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Sport Week magazine, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager expressed confidence in his country’s chances of making a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.

"Portugal are capable of anything," the Benfica tactician said.

"They possess an incredible generation of players. A year ago, they won the Nations League.

"We won the European Championship in 2016, and this generation is technically better than that side. Of course, there's Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil and Argentina, but Portugal can win this World Cup."

Mourinho also weighed in on the growing political controversy surrounding the tournament.

Although FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed Iran’s participation, pressure for their exclusion continues to intensify.

Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy to former US President Donald Trump, has strongly advocated for Italy to replace Iran should tensions in the Middle East worsen further.
