The semi-final line-up at the French Open will be completed on Wednesday. World number one and outright favourite Aryna Sabalenka should ease past Diana Shnaider, while we can also look forward to a surprising quarter-final between Anna Kalinskaya and Polish sensation Maja Chwalinska. Meanwhile, top-10 star Felix Auger-Aliassime finds himself besieged by Italian opponents in the top half of the draw. The schedule starts at 11:00 AM.

Kalinskaya vs Chwalinska - 11:00 CEST

Match news and form

Anna Kalinskaya reaches her second career Grand Slam quarter-final after denying Anastasia Potapova her first one. The Russian prevented her former compatriot from serving out the match on consecutive instances and stunned this year's Linz finalist and Madrid semi-finalist, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, in almost three hours.

Kalinskaya carried an on-off form into the tournament after failing to win more than one match in four of her last six tournaments and even, for instance, falling to Dalma Galfi in Madrid. Further, the 27-year-old had only ever won one match across her four previous main draw appearances at Roland-Garros.

The former World No. 11, currently just outside the top 20, has been asked progressively tougher questions with every round. After comfortably discarding last year's semi-finalist, Lois Boisson, she required a tiebreak against Alina Korneeva and took the scenic route against bitter rival Camila Osorio.

Maja Chwalinska has surprised everybody in Paris after storming into the quarter-final of Roland-Garros upon her tournament main draw debut. Having previously only gone as far as the second round at 2022 Wimbledon for her best Grand Slam result, she has blown that history out of the water as a qualifier.

Chwalinska arrived in Paris ranked 114th and marching towards her top-100 debut, courtesy of a maiden WTA quarter-final in Cluj-Napoca in February and a WTA 125 title in Oeiras in April. However, there were no indications that she would end up upsetting Qinwen Zheng, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari.

The 24-year-old has now become the fourth ever Polish woman to reach the quarter-final of a Grand Slam, taking the latest step with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory over local favourite Diane Parry at Philippe-Chatrier. This is all the more stellar coming from someone who had never beaten a top-50 player before this event.

Head-to-head

This will be their first meeting.

Stats & facts

Kalinskaya blew a set lead and lost to Qinwen Zheng in her only previous Grand Slam quarter-final match at the 2024 Australian Open.

Kalinskaya has won her last five meetings with outside top-100 players in majors.

Chwalinska decisively lost to Emma Raducanu, 6-0, 6-4, in her only previous tour-level quarter-final match at the humble Cluj-Napoca event this year.

Chwalinska has won seven matches in the span of fifteen days in Paris and lost only one set so far.

Betting analysis

Kalinskaya is a considerably more established player on tour, having played over twenty quarter-finals in her career and converting six into at least semi-finals. Chwalinska, on the other hand, was a largely unknown name before this fortnight. While both players will have their chances for glory, the Russian will have calmer nerves heading into Philippe-Chatrier.

Sabalenka vs Shnaider - 12:30 CEST

Match news and form

Aryna Sabalenka throngs into the quarter-final of Roland-Garros for the fourth time in her career, doing so in consecutive years. The World No. 1 has not lost a set after four rounds of play, including dismissing Daria Kasatkina and former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka in the last two matches, albeit with some difficulties.

Sabalenka faced questions on court in the run-up to this tournament, losing to Hailey Baptiste in Madrid and Sorana Cirstea in Rome. Nevertheless, the Belarusian is the undisputed top-ranked player on the tour for a reason, being the reigning champion at the US Open, Indian Wells, and Miami.

It is worth mentioning that, although she has won all four rounds in straight sets, three of her last six sets went to the extended 7-5 mark, including while tussling against Elsa Jacquemot in the second round. Be that as it may, she is now the only Grand Slam champion left in the tournament, giving her a huge edge.

Diana Shnaider reaches her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final upon her twelfth main draw appearance at a tournament where she had never gone past the second round. The Russian faced her toughest challenge of the campaign against former semi-finalist Madison Keys but vanquished the 19th seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Shnaider was not the favourite going up against Keys, having lost her last eight matches against top-20 players as well as holding a 0-7 record against such foes in majors. Nevertheless, she had faced stiff resistance earlier in the campaign, barely beating McCartney Kessler and Oleksandra Oliynykova in straights.

The Russian was not in the best of shape prior to this fortnight, failing to win more than one match in seven of her last eight tournaments. With just a couple of quarter-finals in the first five months of the season - Adelaide and Charleston - she unsurprisingly fell out of the top-20 rankings.

Head-to-head

This will be their first meeting.

Stats & facts

Sabalenka has been to 14 Grand Slam semi-finals to date, following her 13-1 record in quarter-finals.

Sabalenka has a 10-3 record against outside top-20 players at majors in quarter-final or beyond stages.

Shnaider has lost a staggering 14 of 15 lifetime clashes with top-10 players, only beating Coco Gauff in Toronto in 2024.

In any case, Shnaider has never faced a reigning World No. 1 player to date.

Betting analysis

Shnaider's run to the quarter-finals has been special, but it does not hold water against Sabalenka's ethereal form. The Belarusian, who became the runner-up to Gauff last year, is poised for another deep run at the tournament, particularly after the defeat of all her traditional rivals.

Auger-Aliassime vs Cobolli - 14:00 CEST

Match news and form

Felix Auger-Aliassime appears to be peaking at exactly the right time at this French Open, which is hugely important in such a wide-open draw where several players now believe they have a realistic shot at the title. More importantly, his section has completely opened up, giving all four remaining players a genuine chance to reach the final.

The Canadian started the tournament with a tough five-set comeback over Daniel Altmaier, followed it with back-to-back four-set wins against Roman Andres Burruchaga and Brandon Nakashima, before producing his best display of the event by dismantling the dangerous Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets in the round of 16.

This is already Auger-Aliassime's best-ever result at the French Open, as both of his previous round-of-16 appearances at Roland Garros had ended in defeat. However, he does have prior experience of playing a quarter-final match at this venue, having reached the last eight at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where he defeated Casper Ruud before eventually losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals and Lorenzo Musetti in the bronze-medal match.

Flavio Cobolli conceded his first set of the tournament in the round of 16 and very nearly squandered a 5-1 lead in the fourth set before eventually holding his nerve against Zachary Svajda in a tense tiebreak finish. Cobolli showed clear signs of nerves while trying to close out the match, and overall, he still has not been truly tested during this campaign.

That perhaps leaves the Italian slightly undercooked heading into the quarter-finals, where he now faces by far his toughest challenge yet against top-10 player Auger-Aliassime. Cobolli's French Open run has perfectly reflected the pattern of his season, either early exits or deep campaigns.

Most weeks, he has gone out quickly, but whenever he has found momentum, he has delivered big results, including a semi-final in Delray Beach and finals in Acapulco and Munich. Those strong runs have kept him on track for a top-10 breakthrough, and this rare Grand Slam quarter-final now leaves him just one win away from reaching that milestone.

Profile of Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Profile of Felix Auger-Aliassime.Flashscore

Head-to-head

Cobolli has controlled this matchup so far, winning all three of their previous meetings. All of those matches came on hard courts, and two of them went the distance.

Stats & facts

Auger-Aliassime's only quarter-final appearance on clay this year ended in a straight-sets defeat to Italian opponent Jannik Sinner at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Auger-Aliassime holds a balanced 2-2 record in Grand Slam quarter-finals, with both defeats coming against top-10 opponents.

Cobolli has reached the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam only once before, losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year.

Cobolli owns a poor 3-18 career record against top-10 players, and he is still winless against them at the Grand Slam level with a 0-6 record.

Betting analysis

Cobolli is generally the more reliable clay-court player, bringing greater consistency and fighting spirit. However, Auger-Aliassime's level appears to be peaking at exactly the right time, with the Canadian entering this contest with stronger momentum and increasingly convincing performances behind him, giving him a slight edge in this evenly poised battle.

That said, neither player is particularly trustworthy in high-pressure situations, with Auger-Aliassime having faltered in several big matches in the past, while Cobolli showed clear signs of nerves when trying to close out his round-of-16 contest. This feels like a matchup destined for a tense finish, and although Auger-Aliassime may hold a slight edge based on current form, the player who handles the pressure and nerves better is likely to come out on top.

Berrettini vs Arnaldi - 20:15 CEST

Match news and form

Matteo Berrettini's exhausting five-set battle against Francisco Comesana in the third round had raised serious doubts about his chances in the round of 16, but the Italian responded brilliantly by ensuring fatigue and physical concerns never became a factor in a comfortable straight-sets win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

The importance of this quarter-final run cannot be overstated, considering all the struggles Berrettini has endured in recent years with recurring fitness problems, issues that even pushed him outside the top 100. He is now back inside the live top 50, and just as importantly, his confidence appears to have returned in a major way.

During his peak years, when he was fitter and firmly established inside the top 10, Berrettini regularly made deep runs at Grand Slams, only to repeatedly run into some of the toughest opponents imaginable. All three of his previous quarter-final defeats came against Novak Djokovic twice and Casper Ruud once, while both of his semi-final losses were against Rafael Nadal.

Even his lone Grand Slam final appearance ended in defeat to Djokovic. Because of that, this second week must feel very different and far more manageable for Berrettini compared to many of his previous Slam opportunities, and it remains to be seen how much advantage he can take from that opening.

Matteo Arnaldi is producing an outstanding effort in Paris this fortnight. Just a few months ago, earlier this season, he was suffering heavy defeats to players like Mackenzie McDonald and Dusan Lajovic, getting outplayed by lower-ranked opponents, and enduring separate five-match and four-match losing streaks, largely because of the fitness problems that severely disrupted the early part of his year.

From that difficult position, he has now recovered to win back-to-back five-set thrillers, fighting back from losing positions and spending more than five hours on court in each match to secure his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final appearance.

Head-to-head

These two players have never met before.

Stats & facts

Berrettini reached the quarter-finals of the French Open in his most recent appearance here in 2021, losing to Djokovic in four sets.

Berrettini holds a balanced 3-3 career record in Grand Slam quarter-finals.

Arnaldi has won 11 of his last 12 matches.

Arnaldi has not been involved in a straight-set match at this year's French Open.

Betting analysis

Arnaldi has spent nearly 11 hours on court across his last two matches, physically pushing himself to the absolute limit and leaving everything out there. In most situations, a player carrying that kind of workload would struggle to stand much of a chance in a Grand Slam quarter-final. However, the fact that his opponent is Berrettini changes the equation slightly. Berrettini himself has regularly battled physical issues in recent years and is not always the most reliable physically over long matches.

Against him, Arnaldi may not need endless physical grinding to create opportunities. More importantly, the way Arnaldi has kept pulling himself out of trouble and finding ways to win throughout this tournament makes him difficult to dismiss despite the massive workload. Considering the momentum and belief he currently carries, there is definitely a case for backing him to continue this impressive run.
