The Thursday schedule at the French Open will offer highly surprising matches. Almost no one expected all four semi-finalists to be fighting for their first career Grand Slam final. First, at 3:00 PM, the Russian phenomenon Mirra Andreeva will face the incredibly in-form Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. Following that, Polish sensation Maja Chwalinska will challenge another Russian star, Diana Shnaider.

Kostyuk vs Andreeva - 15:00 CEST

Match news and form

Marta Kostyuk made history at Philippe-Chatrier after defeating compatriot Elina Svitolina in history's first-ever all-Ukrainian Grand Slam quarter-final match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. She won 13 of the last 14 points to become the first-ever Ukrainian to reach the semi-final at Roland-Garros in the Open Era.

Kostyuk stunned four-time Roland-Garros champion Iga Swiatek in the previous round in straight sets and overall has survived a couple of three-set matches (also against Katie Volynets). Already ranked at her career-best of No. 15 before this fortnight, she now goes up 17-0 on clay this spring.

After winning just two matches from the Australian Open to Miami, the 23-year-old turned her season around with back-to-back titles in Rouen and Madrid. She made the wise decision to withdraw from Rome before Roland-Garros, a tournament where she had suffered four first-round losses in her last six outings.

Mirra Andreeva came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and crushed in-form veteran Sorana Cirstea, 6-0, 6-3, in 56 minutes under the roof, repeating the recent Linz victory over the Romanian. She has now reached her second Grand Slam semi-final, two years after the first here in Paris.

Andreeva, who has now reached at least the quarter-final stage of Roland-Garros three years in a row, has won an impressive 20 of 23 matches on clay courts this season, nearly twice as many as last year's count on the surface. It includes a title in Linz, a semi-final in Stuttgart, and a final in Madrid.

Thus far in this fortnight, the 19-year-old has won four of five matches in decisive straight sets while having to rally from a set down against Marina Bassols Ribera in the second round. This rich vein of form has meant 34 match wins in the season so far, more than anyone else on the tour.

Head-to-head

Kostyuk leads 2-0 after already beating the Russian teenager a couple of times this season, prevailing in the quarter-finals in Brisbane and in the final of Madrid in straight sets.

Stats & facts

Kostyuk has reached as many WTA finals this season (Brisbane, Rouen, and Madrid) as she did in all of her previous seasons combined.

Kostyuk was 1-8 against top-10 players in majors before this fortnight and now seeks her third such win of the tournament.

Andreeva crashed out to Jasmine Paolini in straight sets when she played her only previous Grand Slam semi-final at 2024 Roland-Garros.

Andreeva has not scored multiple top-20 wins in a single campaign since the back-to-back title runs at 2025 Dubai and Indian Wells.

Betting analysis

The fact that Kostyuk has already vanquished her younger opponent a couple of times in straight sets this season will weigh heavily in her favor and will even put the Ukrainian's nose ahead in this campaign. It is also true that Andreeva may finally enforce a decisive set against Kostyuk after coming close to doing so in their previous clashes.

Shnaider vs Chwalinska - 16:30 CEST

Match news and form

Maja Chwalinska prevented Anna Kalinskaya's fightback in the first set and defeated the Russian, 7-6, 6-3, to continue her historic and sensational Roland-Garros main draw debut. The 24-year-old has, therefore, become the second-ever qualifier in tournament history to reach the semi-finals.

Prior to coming to Paris, Chwalinska had only won six main draw matches in her WTA career, three of which had come this season alone. She reached her maiden WTA quarter-final in Cluj-Napoca in February and won a WTA 125 clay-court title in Oeiras in April as the precursor to this most shocking performance.

Currently ranked 114th, Chwalinska is assured to zoom into the top 50 after dropping only one set across eight matches in the last two and a half weeks. Before knocking out Kalinskaya, she had already upset a series of more notable players: Qinwen Zheng, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari.

Diana Shnaider not only pulled off a whiplashing comeback on Wednesday but did so against the current best player in the world on one of the biggest stages of tennis and in her career's biggest match. Almost down a set and 1-5, the Russian fought back to stun Aryna Sabalenka, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Along with the earlier three-setter against Madison Keys, Shnaider has reached her career's first Grand Slam semi-final, having never before gone past the fourth round in a major. She was 1-14 against top-10 players before the Sabalenka upset, having only beaten Coco Gauff in Toronto in 2024.

Shnaider arrived in Paris having not won back-to-back matches in seven of her last eight tournaments, primarily due to the high quality of opponents. Nevertheless, she had not been to the semi-final of any tournament since Adelaide in January and had consequently fallen out of the top 20 rankings.

Head-to-head

Shnaider leads 1-0. Their only previous encounter came at a considerably modest environment in 2022 when the Russian prevailed 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals of a clay-court ITF event in Istanbul.

Stats & facts

Chwalinska's past experience of reaching semi-finals and finals extends to WTA 125 events, leading to three such titles in the last three years.

Chwalinska seeks her fourth top-50 win of the season, having never claimed one in her career before this tournament.

Shnaider seeks to reach the final with a 6–7 career record in tour-level semi-finals.

Shnaider's last defeat to a player who was yet to debut in the top 100 came to Chloe Paquet here at Roland-Garros in 2024.

Betting analysis

Shnaider would not find a better opportunity to book a place in a Grand Slam final. Despite being younger, the Russian is sufficiently more experienced and successful on tour compared to her opponent, including having reached six WTA finals to date. Shnaider is expected to march ahead with a closely contested straight-set win over a fellow lefty.
