Sinner firm favourite to defend Wimbledon title against new Grand Slam champion Zverev

Jannik Sinner's Wimbledon campaign got off to a stuttering start as he twice had to recover from a set down and needed five sets to overcome Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening round.

Since then, however, he has gone from strength to strength, winning each of his next five matches in straight sets, avoiding any mid-tournament wobble, staying clear of any fitness concerns, and producing his best performance of the fortnight in the semi-finals.

The world No. 1 dismantled seven-time champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final, while also avenging the frustrating five-set semi-final defeat he suffered at the hands of the Serbian at the Australian Open in January.

Had the world No. 1 lived up to expectations at the previous two Grand Slams, defending his title at the Australian Open and capitalising on Carlos Alcaraz's absence at the French Open, he could realistically have arrived at Wimbledon chasing a third major of the season and with a genuine chance of completing the Calendar Grand Slam.

Instead, he is still searching for his first Grand Slam title of the year, with this marking his first major final of the season.

However, having reached the championship match and with Alcaraz no longer standing in his way, Sinner will fancy his chances. Since the start of the 2024 season, he has won 19 of his 24 tour-level finals, with all five defeats coming against one player, Alcaraz.

As the reigning French Open champion and the No. 2 seed, the minimum expectation for Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon was to reach the final, and he has achieved that with the help of a favourable draw and circumstances.

In doing so, he has further strengthened his case as the most consistent Grand Slam performer of the season. He came within a single service hold of reaching the Australian Open final, went on to win his maiden major title at the French Open, and has now reached another Grand Slam final.

This run carries extra significance as Wimbledon had long been the only major where he had never progressed beyond the fourth round. Reaching the final here is another indication of the confidence and belief he has gained on the Grand Slam stage since his breakthrough triumph in Paris.

Winning the long-awaited maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open was undoubtedly the defining moment of Zverev's career. However, the fact that he lifted the trophy without facing a single top-10 opponent inevitably leaves that triumph carrying a slight asterisk. Defeating a player of Sinner's calibre in a Grand Slam final would therefore make this title, if he wins it, even more satisfying.

That, however, is a monumental challenge. Zverev has long struggled against the very best players, a problem that first surfaced at Grand Slams before extending across all levels of the tour. He owns just a 1-14 record against top-five opponents at Grand Slams and is 0-5 against them across all competitions in 2026, with four of those defeats coming against Sinner.

Betting analysis

Sinner has completely dominated this rivalry in recent years, but that in itself is no disgrace for Zverev, considering the Italian has dominated almost everyone not named Alcaraz. What is more concerning is how often Zverev has failed to make the contests competitive, frequently falling away without putting Sinner under sustained pressure, only to watch lower-ranked opponents trouble the world No. 1 in subsequent rounds.

Zverev certainly possesses the physicality and all-around game to test Sinner over a long battle, an area where the Italian has shown occasional vulnerability. The key question is whether he can carry enough belief into this final to extend the match into four or five sets.

With the greater attacking intent and confidence that appear to have stemmed from his recent Grand Slam triumph in Paris, the chances of Zverev putting up a fight against Sinner look much higher than they did in many of their recent one-sided meetings.
