Iga Swiatek is the clear frontrunner for glory at this year's Wuhan Open ahead of Saturday's semi-final clashes. The Polish star, who is looking to unseat Karolina Muchova and take the final qualification spot for the WTA Finals, will be the heavy favourite against compatriot Maja Chwalinska. In the final, she could cross paths with her ultimate nemesis, Jelena Ostapenko, who takes on tournament sensation Sonay Kartal.

Kartal vs Ostapenko - 11:00 CET

Match news and form

Jelena Ostapenko rallied from 2-5 down in the first set and saved multiple set points before defeating 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6, 6-1 in the quarter-finals. As a result, the Latvian - who had not won two matches in a row since Wimbledon coming into Wuhan - reaches her second WTA 1000 semi-final of the year.

Ostapenko had not won more than one match in 23 of her last 28 tournaments in the run-up to this week and had slipped out of the top 30. She had also not won a match in Wuhan since 2017, but now returns to its semi-finals after beating Jessica Pegula and Leylah Fernandez in three sets.

Sonay Kartal extended her epic upset spree in Wuhan by defeating world No. 6 Elina Svitolina, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. Playing just her second tournament since a six-month break, the Brit has now beaten three seeds in a row, starting with Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini.

She was playing some of her best tennis before the half-year break, reaching a WTA 1000 quarter-final in Beijing in October 2025 and posting further last-eight appearances in Auckland and Abu Dhabi before settling for a fourth-round exit in Indian Wells.

Ranked in the top 50 in February, she fell outside the top 150 this month, but will climb back up thanks to her run in China.

Head-to-head

The H2H record is tied at 1-1. The pair met twice during the 2025 grass-court season in the UK, where Ostapenko prevailed in Eastbourne in straight sets but lost at Wimbledon in three.

Stats & facts

- Ostapenko lost to Ashleigh Barty when she played the Wuhan semi-finals nine years ago.

- Ostapenko hasn't been to a final since her April 2025 title in Stuttgart after losing both semi-finals this year, in Doha and Eastbourne.

- Kartal is set to play only her second WTA semi-final, two years since her WTA 250 title triumph in Monastir.

- Kartal is now on a five-match winning streak against top-50 players, accounting for a third of her career win-count.

Betting analysis

Kartal has been defying the odds all week, including recording 6-0 sets against both Bencic and Paolini. In fact, the Brit will have the edge going into the encounter, but it is always a hazard to bet against an improving Ostapenko on familiar ground.

Swiatek vs Chwalinska - 12:30 CET

Match news and form

Iga Swiatek is into just her fourth semi-final of the season, a figure that comes too late in the year by her standards, after defeating Ann Li 6-4, 6-1. She has met only unseeded opponents, starting with lucky losers Magdalena Frech and Ashlyn Krueger, and beat all of them in straight sets.

Swiatek is all but likely to finish the season with fewer than 50 wins, something that hasn't happened since 2021. In fact, she needs to reach the Wuhan final in order to keep alive her bid to qualify for the WTA Finals, a situation she finds herself in after winning only one title in 2026, in Toronto.

Maja Chwalinska cruised into her third career semi-final and the first at the WTA 1000 level after defeating former semi-finalist Maria Sakkari 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 on Friday. It follows her earlier victories over Marie Bouzkova from a set down and world No. 11 Iva Jovic in straight sets.

Chwalinska broke through after storming into the final at Roland Garros as a 114th-ranked qualifier before losing to Mirra Andreeva. She struggled to follow up her Parisian success for many weeks before reaching her first-ever hard-court semi-final in Singapore and repeating the result in Wuhan.

Head-to-head

Swiatek leads 1-0 after winning a long-ago 2016 ITF encounter in Stockholm, Sweden, in straight sets.

Stats & facts

- Swiatek improved to 33-6 against outside-top-20 players in 2026, her worst win-loss percentage in such matches since 2021.

- Swiatek has gone 1-2 in WTA 1000 semi-finals this season, compared to a 1-3 showing in 2025.

- Chwalinska is set to face a top-10 player for only the second time in her career after the Roland Garros final.

- Chwalinska had never beaten a top-50 player on hard courts until a couple of months ago.

Betting analysis

Swiatek will have all the cards in her hand against compatriot Chwalinska. She is one of the most prolific players of her generation at the WTA 1000 level and is expected to venture into uncharted territory in Wuhan as well.
