South Africa are due to host Kenya in Cape Town for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifier next month, a return to his home city for Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy.

According to Mzansi Football, the game will be played on Friday, November 13, with an 18h00 CAT kick-off.

Kenya qualify for the finals as co-hosts along with Tanzania and Uganda, so only one more side will emerge from Group D along with them.

Bafana Bafana made a good start to their campaign with victories at home to Guinea (2-1) and in neutral Cairo against Eritrea (5-0).

They face Kenya in back-to-back qualifiers in the November international window, where a pair of victories would see them put one foot in the finals.

But McCarthy and his men will certainly be fired up for the challenge as they also look to reverse a period of patchy form.

Bafana have a poor record in Cape Town down the years. Including matches in the African Nations Championship for home-based players, they have played 14 times in the Mother City and won only five of those, to go with six defeats. There have been three draws.

They have beaten Angola, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Saudi Arabia and South Sudan, but lost to Cameroon, Nigeria, Norway, Panama, the United States and Zambia.

The draws have come against Jamaica, Mali and Nigeria, who are the only side they have met twice in the city.

Their last visit to the city was in March this year for the pre-World Cup defeat to the Panamanians as they went down 2-1 despite Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s screamer.

AFCON qualification

The qualification competition for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations takes place from September 2026 to March 2027. The 48 teams have been drawn into 12 groups, with the top two in each advancing to the 24-team finals. Hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda qualify automatically, but are still playing in the qualifiers; only one other team will advance from their groups.

In matches at the Cape Town Stadium, a venue for the 2010 World Cup, their record is more balanced with four wins, four defeats and two draws.

Their first game in the city was the 2-1 loss to Cameroon at the Goodwood Showgrounds in July 1992.

Their biggest win was a 3-0 success against South Sudan in 2024, with goals from Iqraam Rayners, Patrick Maswanganyi and Teboho Mokoena, while they have twice lost 3-1, which represents their heaviest defeats.
