With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon next month, we track the potential Bafana Bafana players plying their trade in top leagues abroad.

Some are currently injured, such as Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire) and Siyabonga Ngezana (FCSB), while Olwethu Makhanya (Rangers) and Relebohile Mofokeng (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise) and Shandre Campbell (Kortrijk) do not have fixtures this weekend.

Saturday, August 22

Luke Le Roux (Portsmouth)

Le Roux’s Portsmouth face Lincoln City (13h30 SA time) in the English Championship, though he is likely to start on the bench again at best, having been told he can find a new club.

Samukele Kabini (Molde)

Molde are away at lower-league Midsund (16h00) in the NM Cupen. Left-back Kabini continues to be a key player for the side, but it is touch and go whether he will be rested against the minnows in what should be a routine win.

Ime Okon (Hannover 96)

Hannover lost their opening two 2. Bundesliga games this season but now come up against fifth-tier SV Hemelingen (15h30) in the German Cup, a chance to gain some much-needed confidence.

Sunday, August 23

Puso Dithejane (Chicago Fire)

Dithejane has been sensational for Chicago Fire in recent weeks and is coming off a goal last time out against Orlando City. Next up is New York Red Bulls (01h30) in the early hours of Sunday morning South African time.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United)

Minnesota United are outside the play-off places in MLS and it has been a difficult season for Hlongwane, who has just five starts and 10 substitute appearances. He has yet to find the back of the net either. They are away at San Jose Earthquakes (04h30 SA time).

Lyle Foster (Burnley)

Foster did not play in Burnley’s season opener against West Ham and so will hope for some game-time against West Bromwich Albion (13h00).

Gift Links (AGF)

It has been a tough start to the season for Aarhus as they are winless in three league games (D2 L1), and lost the Super Cup and the first leg of their UEFA Europa League tie at Benfica this week. They were also knocked out of the Champions League by Azerbaijan side Sabah. Next up is the visit of OB (14h00) on Sunday, a chance to get back to winning ways.

Thapelo Maseko (FC Copenhagen)

Maseko joined FC Copenhagen this week and so it is unlikely he will be drafted straight into the team, having not played since the 2026 World Cup. They are away at Viborg (18h00), having won all three of their league games so far this season, a far cry from their struggles of last season.

Tylon Smith (New England Revolution)

Smith has joined New England Revolution on loan from Queens Park Rangers in England and it seems unlikely he will go straight into the match-day squad. But you never know. They play New York City FC (22h30) this weekend.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
