The New York Yankees came up one short of tying a franchise record after scoring 13 runs in the top of the third inning during Sunday's matchup against the Athletics.

They need just two more to break the record held by the 1920 Yankees, when they scored 13 runs against the Washington Nationals

They didn't hit a single home run in what was a 43-minute top-half of the third inning. The team totalled 11 hits on 73 pitches, recording eight singles, four walks, two doubles, two strikeouts, one triple, and one flyout.

New York scored 10 runs before a single out was recorded.

They are now fourth in runs scored (305), barring any extra runs that come across home plate in Friday's game, sitting behind the Nationals (324), Atlanta Braves (316), and Los Angeles Dodgers (313).

It marks the second time in franchise history that the Yankees scored 13 runs in a single inning. The last time was in the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21, 2005, eventually winning 20-11.

New York aren't strangers to hitting records. Last season, the Yankees also tied a franchise record after hitting nine home runs in a single game. Ironically, it was also against the Rays.

The Yankees headed into Sunday's matchup with a 35-23 record, sitting two games behind their division rival Rays (36-20) for first place in the American League
