Goaltender Frederik Andersen surpassed Cam Ward for the most playoff wins (24) in franchise history, all while tying him for most playoff shutouts (4), bringing his career total to seven.
The Canes became just the fifth team in Stanley Cup Playoffs history to win their first five games without trailing once in any of them.
But the big star of the game was Carolina's Logan Stankoven, who made both NHL and Hurricanes history during Game 1...
Recap & Highlights
The Canes had extra rest after sweeping the Ottawa Senators and it showed right after puck drop against Philly.
Stankoven continued his playoff tear after scoring his fifth goal of the playoffs to make it 1-0, not even a full two minutes into the game, with assists from Mike Reilly (1) and Jackson Blake (4).
He officially became the youngest player (23 years, 65 days) in Stanley Cup Playoff history to start the playoffs scoring at least one goal in the first five games.
It also marked the first time in Hurricanes/Whalers history that a player started the playoffs with a five-goal game streak, now also holding the most game-opening goals in franchise playoff history.
And Carolina wouldn't take much longer to double their lead.
Almost exactly six minutes later Blake scored his second goal of the playoffs as the Canes took a 2-0 led.
Mike Reilly picked up his second assist in his first playoff game with the Canes after Alexander Nikishin was ruled out with a concussion. Only one player in franchise history has more points in their playoff debut with the team - John Cullen with three points in 1991.
Philly finished the first period with four total shots on goal despite having two power play opportunity. Carolina went 0-for-1 on their lone power play chance, but put up two goals on 12 shots.
Both teams split the face-offs 50-50, while Philly outhit Carolina 20-13.
The Flyers would open the second period with their third power play chance of the night, but would fail once again as the score remained 2-0. They wouldn't put up their fifth shot on goal for the game until 11 minutes into the second period after killing off Carolina's second power play.
Garnet Hathaway had a breakaway chance to get the Flyers on the board, but Carolina's K'Andre Miller made a diving pokecheck to deny him.
The game would start to get out of reach for Philly with under four minutes to go and who else but Stankoven, who scored his second of the game to make it 3-0.
He is now tied with Tampa Bay's Brandon Hagel and Minnesota's Matt Boldy for the most goals of any active players in the playoffs with six.
Seth Jarvis picked up his third assist, and Andrei Svechknikov his first.
Heading into the third period, the Hurricanes held the Flyers to nine shots on goal. That's tied with two other teams for the fewest in any game through the first two periods these playoffs.
The other two teams? The Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Ottawa Senators in Game 1 against...the Hurricanes, a game in which the latter won 2-0.
Carolina would go into the third period outshooting the Flyers 21-9 and with 1:15 left on their third power play of the game, with nothing to come from it.
After both teams went on a 4-v-4, and the Flyers went on their fourth power play - nothing doing. They would outshoot Carolina 9-2 in the third, tying their amount of shots on goal from the first two periods, but failed to find the net.
Game 1 would have a scoreless third period that saw a total of 12 penalties dished out, more than doubled of that from the first and second periods combined.
Carolina finished the game outshooting Philly 23-19, while the reverse happened in hits 47-30.
Stankoven posted the highest Flashscore player rating of the game with an 8.3.
