The president of the world football governing body (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, has congratulated Kenyan giants Gor Mahia for clinching the 2025/26 FKF Premier League crown.

Gor Mahia reclaimed the title after their closest rivals, AFC Leopards, suffered a 2-1 defeat against APS Bomet at Kericho Green Stadium last Sunday.

The defeat left Gor Mahia four points clear at the top, meaning if AFC Leopards win their remaining fixture against Bidco United, they will not be able to overtake the league leaders.

So far, Gor Mahia have amassed 69 points from 32 matches, while AFC Leopards are second with 64 points. While Leopards have a game to play, Gor Mahia have one to conclude the season.

Ahead of their coronation on Sunday, when they face Nairobi United, Gor Mahia, who have now lifted a record 22 titles, have received a message from Infantino.

In a statement issued through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Infantino praised the seasoned campaigners for their consistency and competitive edge throughout the season.

Gor Mahia’s efforts paid off

"I am pleased to congratulate the recently crowned champions of Kenya, Gor Mahia FC," Infantino said.

"Their constant efforts and results through the season have paid off, resulting in this important title. Congratulations to each and every member of the team and of the club for this great achievement," he added.

The statement added in a message to FKF boss Hussein Mohammed: "While thanking you and your Federation for your continuous support, work and dedication for the development of football in your country, I look forward, dear President, to seeing you again soon."

On his part, the FKF boss said: "On behalf of Football Kenya Federation, I acknowledge with gratitude FIFA’s congratulatory message to Gor Mahia for winning the Premier League.

"This gesture reflects FIFA’s recognition of the progress being made in Kenyan football. It also reinforces the Federation’s resolve to build a stronger, more competitive league that can consistently produce clubs capable of excelling in Africa.

"We thank FIFA for its support and encouragement, and we reaffirm our commitment to the growth and integrity of the game in Kenya. This gesture reflects FIFA’s recognition of the progress being made in Kenyan football."

Responding to the message from the FIFA supremo, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier said: "We are happy as a club… this marks the first time a FIFA President has personally congratulated us on our performance.

"It means the world to us, as it validates our efforts and adds authenticity and credibility to our victory. President Infantino’s message is a clear acknowledgement of the hard work we have invested throughout the season to achieve this success.

"Above all, it firmly puts to rest any allegations of unfair play from the naysayers, once and for all."

Relegation battle on Sunday

While Sofapaka and Bidco United have automatically been relegated, the final slot of the team to be axed will be confirmed on Sunday when the league comes to an end.

Sofapaka, who were the first to be relegated, are lying at the bottom of the 18-team league table with 19 points from 33 matches, while Bidco United are above them with 24 points from the same number of matches.

The remaining relegation slot is now between Mathare United and Kariobangi Sharks. The 'Slum Boys' will host Bandari FC at home on the final day, while Sharks will be up against Sofapaka.

Sharks are lying in position 16th, which is in the relegation zone, and if they beat Sofapaka, and Mathare lose their fixture, they will keep their status in the top-flight.

However, a defeat for Sharks will ensure Mathare United keep their status even if they lose their game against the Dockers.
