Nigeria suffered a major setback ahead of the March 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, as Semi Ajayi was ruled out with an injury.

The Baggies defender will miss selection after sustaining a hamstring injury during the club’s 2-0 win over Oxford United at the Hawthorns on February 22nd.

With Alex Mowatt giving Tony Mowbray’s side an 11th minute lead, Ajayi was subbed off injured in the 41st minute for Jamaica international Mason Holgate.

"Albion can confirm Semi Ajayi will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hamstring injury," a statement from the club website read.

"The central defender came off in the 41st minute during last weekend’s 2-0 win against Oxford United.

"He will now enter a period of rehabilitation and will target a return before the season’s conclusion. Everyone at the club wishes Semi a speedy recovery."

Manager Eric Chelle will be looking to win the two upcoming fixtures in a bid to rescue the country’s fading hopes of a place in the tournament to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Super Eagles are currently fifth in Group C, having earned just three points from four matches played.

Ajayi joined West Bromwich Albion from Rotherham United in July 2019 for an undisclosed fee and has made 169 league appearances for the five-time FA Cup winners.

The defender’s injury setback is not only a major blow for Nigeria but also a significant setback to West Bromwich Albion’s ambition of securing a return to the English Premier League.

"It's disappointing for him, frustrating for him and for us," Mowbray told BBC Radio WM.

"He's got all the qualities to be a really, really talented player and he's got real confidence in his mobility to defend, so it allows us to play a higher line in some games recently and try and keep the opposition away from our goal.

"He'll be a loss but we wish him a speedy recovery and we will get on with it with the fit players. We wish Semi a speedy recovery."
