Squeezed between the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the major train line that bissects the MCG and the Melbourne Park tennis complex, Brunton Avenue runs along the southern end of the Melbourne Cricket Ground complex, passing Richmond's Punt Road Oval before curling around north onto Wellington Parade.
The ten-time Premiership-winning player and coach has won a growing list of accolades in his honour, including the Ron Barassi Medal which since 2014 has been awarded to the captain of the Premiership-winning side.
Barassi's son, Ron Barassi Jr, spoke of his great pride in the formal recognition that was unveiled on Friday morning.
“This is a huge and unique honour for dad and our family,’’ he stated.
“Dad was a player or coach in 17 Grand Finals at the MCG over 25 years, winning the premiership ten times.
“So, it does seem fitting that the road to the home of Australian football’s highest achievement bears his name.”
Barassi played and coached hundreds of VFL games at the MCG across a momentous 42-year career and is now touted as one of the most important past legends of the sport, whilst he also won the Victorian of the Year award in 2009 for intervening in an assault on a St Kilda street despite his advanced age.
The honour was announced on what would have been his 90th birthday, two and a half years after his passing in 2023.
