Anders Antonsen was sent crashing out of the Malaysian Open on Saturday when he lost the semi-final to a completely superior World No. 1, Chinese Shi Yu Qi, 21-13, 21-14.

Antonsen thus failed to repeat the feat from 2024, where he just managed to beat Shi Yu Qi in the final.

Last year, the two also met in the final match of the tournament, but this time, Shi Yuqi will have the pleasure of facing Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand in the final.

Antonsen came out aggressively on the side that, due to the wind conditions in the hall, is considered the worst.

The Dane got off to a good start, but Shi Yuqi quickly settled into his stride, and showed his technical skills, especially at the net.

The Chinese made it 9-5, but Antonsen hit back with five successive points to make it very close at the changeover.

Antonsen was forced to play every ball perfectly to get the most out of the duels, and he couldn't keep up that level. If he wasn't fully focused at the net or hit the balls at the wrong height, he was promptly punished.

Shi Yuqi widened the gap and closed out the set at the first opportunity.

Things didn't get any better in the second set for Antonsen, who quickly fell behind.

The Chinese was razor-sharp and grabbed nine successive points, while Antonsen threw himself around the court in vain.

Shi Yuqi made it 20-10, and although the third-seeded Dane desperately attemtpted a late comeback, Shi Yu Qi didn't allow him back in the game.

As early as next week, Antonsen will have another chance to win his first tournament in 2026, when the Super 750 tournament India Open is played in New Delhi.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
