In our weekly feature, we take a brief look at the main events of the last seven days in the NBA. In this edition, we look at the irresistible Oklahoma City Thunder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the demise of the Dallas Mavericks, while Nikola Jokic continues to make history.

Team of the week

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to prove why they are one of the favourites to win the championship this year, improving their record to 53 wins and just 11 losses at the start of March.

A well-balanced outfit, the Thunder beat three of the top five teams in the Western Conference in the past week, downing the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets, as well as the Portland Trail Blazers.

They have the best defence in the NBA this season with a defensive rating of 105.6, while also having the fourth best offense (118.4 offensive rating).

The overwhelming favourites to come out of the West, it is currently hard to see anyone stop them.

Player of the week

As it stands, it looks like the Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is set to be named MVP, and this past week may have just wrapped that up.

The Canadian has had a truly stellar season, and in his three games this week, scored 51 points against the Rockets, 41 against the Grizzlies and 40 against the Nuggets.

A relentless points scorer, he now has 40 30+ point games this season, illustrating just that.

Unless something changes dramatically, he will pip Nikola Jokic to the MVP crown, and he will be instrumental if Oklahoma want to storm through the playoffs.

Underachievers of the week

It is all going terribly wrong for the Dallas Mavericks.

After reaching the NBA Finals last season, the Mavs were expected to be a real contender this year, especially after acquiring Klay Thompson, Quentin Grimes and Naji Marshall in the off-season.

However, a diabolical few months has seen their season be totally ripped apart, with Luka Doncic departing, Kyrie Irving suffering a season-ending injury, while big men Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford also missing with long-term injuries.

Losses to the Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns in the last seven days showcase that the Mavs have nothing left to give and are practically down and out. While they still sit just inside a play-in spot, it is very likely that they will continue to lose games and end up missing out on the play-in tournament.

What a fall from grace for a side that many feared at the start of the season.

Play of the week

No one will ever get fed up of seeing Stephen Curry produce three-point magic. The Golden State Warriors have been in fabulous form since trading for Jimmy Butler, and as they picked up another win against the Brooklyn Nets, Curry produced this miraculous half-court shot to beat the buzzer on the cusp of half-time.

Story of the week

Nikola Jokic may not win his fourth MVP this year, but there is little doubt that he is the best player in the world. And the facts are that he may be enjoying his best season to date, averaging 28.8 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.5 assists per game - otherworldly numbers.

Against the Phoenix Suns on March 8th, Jokic achieved something that no other player in the history of the NBA has. With a 31-point, 21-rebound and 22-assist performance, he achieved the first ever 30+ point, 20+ rebound, 20+ assist game.

A one-man offensive machine, 'the Joker' continues to dominate, and while the Denver Nuggets aren't the side that won the title in 2022, as long as they have Jokic fit and firing, it'll be hard to write them off.
