The National Basketball League (NBL) and Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) have each had to postpone weekend matches owing to dangerous weather in opposite parts of the country.

Saturday's 'Sunshine Stoush' between the Cairns Taipans and Brisbane Bullets at the Cairns Convention Centre, initially set down for a tip-off of 4:30pm local time, has been postponed indefinitely due to the threat of a cyclone making landfall in far north Queensland.

The Convention Centre has been closed under its Emergency Response Plan as Bureau of Meterology (BoM) forecasters declared on Friday afternoon that the tropical low in the Coral Sea was a "50-60% chance" of forming into a Category 1 cyclone and making landfall on Saturday night between Cairns and Ayr.

The NBL is yet to announce a new date for the rescheduled match.

Down south, a Friday night WNBL fixture between Bendigo Spirit and Southside Flyers in Ballarat was cancelled due to extreme heat and a large bushfire that was less than 50 kilometres southwest of Selkirk Stadium in Skipton on Friday night.

With temperatures still at 32*C half an hour before the 7:30pm tipoff, the Streatham-origin fire was heading in an easterly direction towards Linton on Friday night ahead of a cool change on Saturday morning.

We at Flashscore Australia send our immense gratitude to all those involved in fighting the dozens of active fires across Victoria as well as the volunteers helping far northeast Queensland to prepare for a potential cyclone.

Never drive into floodwaters or a bushfire evacuation zone. If you're in an affected area, please heed the advice of emergency services and local authorities. Use your ABC local radio station and ABC website for up-to-date emergency broadcasts.
