Galatasaray came into this game in fine form, having won each of their first five matches of the 2025/26 campaign, conceding just once in the process. Okan Buruk’s side survived an early scare, as Frankfurt nearly took the lead inside just two minutes.
But the visitors didn’t let that dissuade them and took the lead after eight minutes thanks to a clinical left-footed strike across goal from Yunus Akgun nestled in the bottom-right corner.
The Lions remained in control for the majority of the first half, but they were unable to make it to half-time with their lead intact, as they capitulated right before the whistle.
First, Davinson Sanchez was unfortunate enough to deflect Ritsu Doan’s shot past Ugurcan Cakir before the game was flipped on its head in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half, with Frankfurt going ahead for the first time in the game through Can Uzun.
The young Turk fired into the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area, and the hosts weren’t done there, adding a third just before the break as Jonathan Burkardt rose highest to head into the right side of the goal from Fares Chaibi’s free-kick.

The shell-shocked away side had a golden opportunity to get themselves back into the game with an hour on the clock, though, going close when Baris Yilmaz played a low ball into the six-yard box, but Ilkay Gundogan could only direct his effort from close range straight at Michael Zetterer.
Galatasaray were made to regret their missed chances too, with the Eagles netting their fourth just six minutes later, as Burkardt bagged his second of the game with a header that took yet another big deflection off of Sanchez, aiding the German international forward.
Things continued to get worse for Buruk’s side, conceding a fifth with 15 minutes left to play, thanks to Ansgar Knauff, after Gabriel Sara was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area.
The Eagles saw the game out comfortably from there to claim a stunning three points that lifts them to the top of the table after the first round of fixtures.
