Scott grew up during a peak era of Australian golf, watching on the television as a child as Greg Norman lifted the Australian Open trophy at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 1985 and 1987 (accounting for two of the five times he won the tournament), with Wayne Riley's win in 1991 being the last time the Open appeared at the 7,100-yard sandbelt course.
Scott, who last won the Australian Open in 2009 at the New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney, has long had a special place in his heart for Royal Melbourne, describing the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne as "some of the greatest feelings I've ever experienced on a golf course".
He jumped at the opportunity to potentially add to his list of five Aussie golf major titles at one of the country's most historic and prestigious clubs and comes into the tournament in excellent form after finishing tied for seventh at last weekend's Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane.
"I think winning the Aussie Open at Royal Melbourne has one of those asterisks next to it where it's just that little bit more meaningful," Scott said on Tuesday morning.
"It's nothing against anywhere else but just the fact we haven't played a national open here since 1991 is going to make this a really special one and for every Aussie golfer, but I think also for anyone who's here, if they were to win, it's kind of a feather in the cap. It's something to be incredibly proud of.
"We have had other events here in my career but we haven't had the Aussie Open here so this is a chance for me to step back and remember how it felt as that little kid watching these great players play the national championship on one of the greatest courses in the world."
The 45-year-old didn't wish to get carried away with his chances of winning the tournament this week let alone think of being selected to play in the 2028 Presidents Cup in Melbourne but has recently spoken of still feeling in his 30s 'biologically' and was fairly pleased with his performance in Brisbane last week.
"It feels pretty good," Scott said.
"There was lots of good stuff. A couple of mistakes early in the week probably cost me up there, but all good things.
"I think hopefully some of my experience of playing around here in championship conditions helps me out and a couple of less mistakes and I might be able to hang in there and have a crack at this thing."
Scott will tee off with marquee act Rory McIlroy and Min Woo Lee at 7:05am local time on Thursday.
