SC Magdeburg maintained their lead in the German Handball League and completed a successful dress rehearsal for the Final Four of the German Cup with a 35-31 (15-14) win against HC Erlangen on Sunday, while Mathias Gidsel, as so many times before, saved Fuchse Berlin with a goal three seconds from the end against TBV Lempo Lippe.

Magdeburg now lead the table with 52 points. With six games left to play, Magdeburg is seven points ahead of SG Flensburg-Handewitt in first place; Omar Ingi Magnusson was the game's leading goal scorer with 14 goals.

In the reverse fixture on 20 September, Erlangen managed a 31-31 draw to become the first club to take points off Magdeburg this season. Magdeburg were also challenged at times on Sunday and trailed in the first half  before finally settling into their stylish stride after the interval.

Reigning champions Fuchse Berlin had a nice preview for their Cup semi-final against TBV Lempo Lippe when they prevailed 34.33 (17-15) on home soil after World handball player Mathias Gidsel scored the winning goal three seconds before the end.

The German champions, led by their leading goal scorer Lasse Andersson (10 goals), thus kept their chances alive in the tight race for a Champions League place in third place in the table (44:12 points). The Bundesliga has secured three places in the Champions League, which will be expanded from 16 to 24 teams, for the coming season. However, the actual distribution is still open.

Meanwhile, THW Kiel maintained their chances in the upper third of the table and won the northern duel at HSV Hamburg 34-27 (19-14). Eric Johansson was THW's leading goal scorer with eight goals, while Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas also impressed with numerous saves.
