SC Magdeburg extended their lead in the Handball Bundesliga with a hard-fought victory on Sunday when the Champions League winners claimed a 27-25 (11-11) win against relegation-threatened Bergischer HC, taking advantage of a slip-up by SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Flensburg, previously Magdeburg’s closest challenger, lost the northern derby at THW Kiel the day before (33-37) and now trail Magdeburg by seven points.

Just four days after their clear Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain (26-34), Magdeburg also struggled against BHC in Düsseldorf. It wasn’t until two minutes before halftime that coach Bennet Wiegert’s team took the lead for the first time, but even after that, they were never able to pull away. In a tense final phase, the visitors kept their composure. Magdeburg’s Felix Claar was the leading goalscorer of the match with ten goals.

"That was a really tough battle," said Magdeburg backcourt player Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson to Dyn. "Everyone was desperate to win, but we still have plenty of room for improvement in terms of performance."

Bundesliga: Füchse move up to second - Lemgo suffer home defeat

Füchse Berlin also benefited from Flensburg’s loss and jumped to second place with a goal fest on Sunday. Led by three-time World Handball Player Mathias Gidsel (eleven goals), the champions swept past HC Erlangen with a 45-29 (23-15) victory and, after their ninth consecutive league win, remain six points behind the leaders. The top clash is set for the next matchday on 28 March.

At least the fans of Bergischer HC had something to cheer about, as the club announced before kickoff that key player Sören Steinhaus had extended his contract until 2028. However, the relegation battle is becoming more intense for BHC. With this defeat, the first relegation spot, now held by HSG Wetzlar, is just two points away. The new bottom team is SC DHfK Leipzig after their 29-29 (17-17) draw on Sunday against TVB 1898 Stuttgart.

In the race for international spots, TBV Lemgo Lippe suffered a setback. The sixth-placed team lost at home 27-30 (14-11) to Frisch Auf Göppingen.
