German handball champions Füchse Berlin are making an immediate change in the position of coach and sporting director. As the club announced on Thursday, champion coach Jaron Siewert will be relieved of his duties with immediate effect. Instead, the Dane Nicolej Krickau will take over as coach and head of sport. In a personal meeting on Thursday, managing director Bob Hanning also agreed to separate immediately from sporting director Stefan Kretzschmar, who announced his departure at the end of the season two days ago.

"After the developments of the past few days, we sensed that a fundamental change was needed. The fact that we are now parting ways with Jaron at the end of a turbulent 48 hours is the most difficult decision of my 20 years with the Foxes," said Hanning. Krickau will already be on the sidelines for the top match on Saturday (3.40 pm/ARD and Dyn) against Champions League winners SC Magdeburg.

Krickau new coach - Drux supports

The Dane Krickau, most recently employed by SG Flensburg-Handewitt, has signed a three-year contract. Club veteran Paul Drux has also been given a new role in the capital: The former national team player, who had to end his career in the previous season due to injury, will act as a "link between the team, coach and management" from the coming season.

The 31-year-old Siewert became the youngest coach to win a championship in Bundesliga history in the previous season. Like Kretzschmar, he had been in charge of the Berliners since 2020 and steered the team led by world handball player Mathias Gidsel to the Champions League final in the previous season in addition to the league title. His contract also runs until 2026.

"We are very grateful to Jaron for his commitment and dedication. We carry the last few years deep in our hearts. Nevertheless, we are also looking to the future," said Hanning: "In Nicolej Krickau, we have been able to recruit our preferred candidate for the big tasks ahead. He will leave his mark on our team. We look forward to working with him."

Tensions between Hanning and Kretzschmar escalate.

On Tuesday, the recent growing tensions between Hanning and Kretzschmar reached their climax for the time being. The former world-class left winger announced via Instagram and apparently without consulting the club that he would definitely not extend his contract, which expires in 2026. The club reacted "surprised" and with "great regret" in a brief statement.

"Without him, the successes in this form would not have been possible; he helped shape the club's fortunes for over five years," Hanning said."Our time together has cost us all a lot of strength. Füchse Berlin are above all else in all of our decisions, which is why we have jointly decided to draw a line under it." Kretzschmar said that the decision "hurts": "But it creates clarity for everyone involved and allows the club to reorganise itself."
