Sweden handball head coach Michael Apelgren is neither expecting the sack nor preparing to step down from his role, despite failing to guide the co-hosts into the semi-finals of EHF EURO 2026.

Sweden won five, drew one and lost one of their seven matches in Malmo, yet that was only good enough to finish third of six in their Main Round group and miss out on the last four on head-to-head record with Iceland, the only team to beat them.

The Swedes will complete their European championship campaign on Friday when they play Portugal in the fifth-place match in Herning, Denmark.

Previously the assistant coach, Apelgren took over as head coach in 2024, and has now overseen two Main Round exits at major championships, after Blagult could only manage a 14th-placed finish at the 2025 World Championship.

Despite back-to-back disappointments on the biggest stages, the Stockholm man and current coach of Hungary's Pick Szeged has no plans to leave his post any time soon.

When asked if he will lead the team into the 2027 World Championship, he replied, "I believe I have a contract until 2028."

Sweden were looking unstoppable early in the tournament, winning four in a row, including brushing aside a Croatia side who ended up topping the Main Round group.

The Iceland loss, followed by a draw with Hungary and other results going against them meant the Swedes were already out before they thrashed Switzerland in their final Main Round match.

"We lost one game and that was enough. But if we had gone to Herning to play the semi-finals, I think we would have had the chance to beat every team," Apelgren continued.

Player of the Match against Switzerland with an incredible 50% save rate was 39-year-old Andreas Palicka, who addressed the home crowd on what was his final tournament match on home soil.

"It's emotional, of course, but in the end I'm still standing here with a broken heart. It's an extremely big disappointment."

But the goalkeeper doesn't want to hang up his shoes just yet - when asked about the possibility of playing future championships, he responded, "I ask that you please come back to that."
