French handball outfit Nantes has signed captain of Aalborg Handball, René Antonsen, for an undisclosed fee. Antonsen will commence his stay in France this summer.

33-year-old Antonsen has, with the exception of a two-year stay in Ribe-Esbjerg, played his entire career in Aalborg.

Now he wants test himself outside of Denmark.

"If there's one thing I haven't tried yet, it's playing abroad. Therefore, together with my family, I have chosen that this is the opportunity to live out that dream, while at the same time I can continue in a club that also plays at a high level and competes in the Champions League."

"Of course it will be sad when I have to stop in Aalborg this summer, but my focus now and here is solely on continuing the season at the high level we have set for the day since this summer", he says to Aalborg's website.

Antonsen has played no less than 500 games and scored 673 goals for Aalborg. The club would have liked to see him continue, admits director Jan Larsen.

"Having said that, René has always been a loyal and extremely well-liked ambassador for us, which is why we didn't think twice when we had to decide whether we wanted to comply with his wish and sell him to Nantes", says the director.

René Antonsen has also played seven matches for Denmark. In 2022, he participated in the European Championships with the Danish team, where he played a secondary role.
