Now the Portuguese international, who made his comeback in midweek when Aalborg lost to Magdeburg in the Champions League, has spoken for the first time about his experiences in January which has taken a big toll on his family.
"It's fantastic to be back. It was a hard period for me to be out for a month, but I was very happy to come back against Magdeburg" (on Wednesday, ed.), says Martins to TV 2 Sport.
Martins says he has enjoyed lots of support from people around him to get through an emotional rollercoaster.
"It was difficult because I couldn't do what I loved most, which is playing handball. It's my life. Fortunately, I have had my teammates, family and my girlfriend to talk to the whole time."
"It has been a nightmare for my family. They are back home in Portugal so they couldn't sleep and stuff but when I called them they were really happy and the same for my friends."
Miguel Martins and Aalborg are back in action Saturday afternoon when they face GOG in the Danish league.
