A superb defensive performance from the Danish national team was enough for Helle Thomsen's outfit to book their ticket for the quarter-final of the World Championships following a 36-23 win against Switzerland.

As in previous matches in the tournament Denmark started off slow and struggled to add any rhythm to their play during the opening of the match.

The Swiss took advantage of this and quite symptomatically for the Alpine country's handball darlings, it was the two Team Esbjerg players Mia Emmenegger and Tabea Schmid who were first on the scoreboard.

The Danish defense was very focused around the threat of Tabea Schmid and she also became the Swiss' leading goalscorer in the match.

The Danish central defensive block was compact as never before, and Tabea Schmid had difficult working conditions. Nevertheless, the Swiss were ahead at the beginning until they completely stalled.

After a messy start, the Danes, who very untraditionally were wearing black uniforms, gradually recovered their stylish stride.

Thanks to a superb Anna Kristensen between the posts and seven successive goals, the Danes turned a deficit of 3-5 into 10-5 on the scoreboard. The Swiss players were visibly shaken but managed to limit the damage to a four-goal deficit at the interval.

The Swiss were beaming with optimism on their way to the locker room, but it didn't take the Danes long to strip them of their confidence in the second half as the Danish counter-attacking machine got going. .

Helena Elver scored three almost identical counter-attacking goals within a few minutes, as the Danish efficiency increased after the break.

The match was decided five minutes into the second half, and then Helle Thomsen was able to give some of her lesser names a chance to shine.

Chances are you’re about to lose.
