Helle Thomsen on Saturday celebrated her debut as new Danish women's national coach in handball with a humiliating 39-23 defeat against Iceland.

Denmark in Frederikshavn won a test match 39-23 over an Icelandic outfit that were several levels below Denmark.

Even before the first half was over, Denmark had created a gap of more than ten goals. And the Icelandic resistance was so minimal that Helle Thomsen and her famous assistant, Bojana Popovic, probably didn't learn a whole lot about their national team.

In the first half, the Danish defense struggled to get organized, as Thomsen tried an offensive defensive variant, which will require time to adjust if Denmark wants to use it at the World Championships in November and December.

After the break, the tension totally vanished from a scrappy game where Denmark looked unfocused, making far too many mistakes.

But the visitors still couldn't keep up with a Danish side who were never challenged and had the easiest time carving out chances to add to the scoreboard.

One of Helle Thomsen's big challenges in the period leading up to the World Championships is the line position. The three prominent names Kathrine Heindahl, Rikke Iversen and Sarah Iversen are all unavailable due to pregnancy, and therefore Saturday's match was used to test two new names.

Sofie Bardrum, who had never played for the senior national team before, showed her great abilities in the attack, where she never struggled to make room for herself thanks to her great physique.

She shared playing time with Nanna Hinnerfeldt, who, unlike Bardrum, is also capable of defending at a high level.

The next task for Helle Thomsen will be in October, when Denmark face the Czech Republic and Turkey.,

Chances are you’re about to lose.
