Sweden have achieved their first objective at the 2025 Women's World Handball Championship, reaching the Main Round with a match to spare, after they hammered Cuba 46-17 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Sweden opened their Group G campaign on Thursday with an eight-goal win over Czech Republic, while outsiders Cuba were well-beaten by Brazil, meaning an expected victory in their second game would see the Swedes progress.

An hopes Cuba had of a shock result were put to bed quickly - Olivia Lofqvist scored the opening goal to give Sweden a lead they never relinquished, and quickly established a 10-2 lead with goals from the likes of Clara Lerby and Tyra Axner.

As Blagult piled on the goals, there was no let up in defence at the other end, as goalkeeper Filippa Idehn saved 47% of the shots she faced in the first half, which Sweden closed by going on a 7-0 run - with Elin Hansson unstoppable in attack.

A 25-9 half-time lead allowed head coach Tomas Axner to rotate his squad in the second 30 minutes, but his side still racked up another 21 goals and, remarkably, they again put together a best run of seven goals unanswered at the very end of the half against the tiring Cuban defence, for 46-17.

Lerby top-scored with 11 goals, ahead of Tyra Axner's eight, while Hansson and Mathilda Lundstrom were both perfect with their shooting, scoring six and five goals from as many shots, respectively.

Sweden will be back in action tomorrow against Brazil to decide not just who finishes top of Group G, but who takes the maximum four points through to the Main Round.
