It was goals galore in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Friday night, where the Carolina Hurricanes scored nine times in their huge win. A look at what occurred.

Carolina Hurricanes 9-1 Florida Panthers

The Carolina Hurricanes rattled off eight goals unanswered - six in the third period - to cruise past the Florida Panthers 9-1.

Seven different players got on the board for the Canes, with Nikolaj Ehlers managed a hat-trick plus an assist. While the Dane ledd the scoring on the night, he was one of eight for the hosts to pick up multiple points on the night.

Ehlers had put Carolina in front just before the end of the opening period, only for Florida to respond through Uvis Janis Balinski 79 seconds after intermission.

From there, it was the Hurricanes, who took the lead midway through the second frame, that dominated the contest. They ended up scoring five of the goals in the final nine minutes as they ended a two-game losing skid to go into a three-way tie for first in the Eastern Conference.

Two-time defending Stanley Cup winners, the Panthers are still on the outside looking in regarding the playoff picture. They are three points out, losing for the 19th time this season.

Detroit Red Wings 4-2 San Jose Sharks

It was victory for the Detroit Red Wings at home to the San Jose Sharks, as the Michigan-based team rallied to top their opponents 4-2.

Alex DeBrincat got the Red Wings in front six minutes and change into the first, before they found themselves behind by the start of the second. William Smith tied things up for the Sharks shortly after they went behind, with Collin Graf giving the guests the lead less than two minutes after intermission.

Detroit, who had outshot San Jose 49-28 in the contest, levelled the score through J.T. Compher, leaving the game perfectly poised heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The home team would get their winner with 15:19 left, when Dylan Larkin made the most of his chance. Marco Kasper put the game to bed with a minute and a half to go.

It is a fifth win for the Red Wings from their last six, as they join the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Hurricanes atop the Eastern Conference standings. The Sharks cling onto the last postseason berth in the West despite the defeat.
