Utah Hockey Club thrashed Vegas Golden Knights on a busy Saturday night of NHL action as the Eastern Conference leaders Washington Capitals continued to shine in a 6-5 victory over their closest rivals, New Jersey Devils.

Vegas Golden Knights 0 Utah Hockey Club 6

Utah upset the odds in Vegas on Saturday night, scoring six without reply - their first shutout as a franchise - to put their overtime loss to Edmonton behind them as Nick Schmaltz starred with two goals for the visitors.

Utah did the damage early as they scored four goals in the opening period. Clayton Keller got them going in the sixth minute, before Alexander Kerfoot netted whilst his side were shorthanded four minutes later.

Momentum was really with them then, as Schmaltz got his first of the night in the 10th minute before Logan Cooley rounded off a superb period.

They continued to role after the break, and after Nicolas Hague and Lawson Crouse were given a penalty for fighting, Michael Carcone got in on the act to give Utah a five-goal advantage.

The pain for the Golden Knights didn't stop there as the away side pounced during a powerplay through Schmaltz to make it 6-0.

The scoring stopped there, but the Golden Knights never looked like mounting a comeback and it was a day to remember in the Sin City for Utah.

New Jersey Devils 5 Washington Capitals 6

Washington Capitals continued to lead the Eastern Conference, getting their fourth-straight win thanks to a back-and-forth 6-5 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Newark.

In a match-up between the top two in the conference, it was always expected to be a close encounter, and it was the Capitals who got the scoring underway in the seventh minute through Andrew Mangiapane

New Jersey hit back soon after through Switzerland's Nico Hischier. Those were the only two goals of the opening period, as both sides wasted powerplay opportunities to break ahead.

That did come three minutes into the second period as Justin Dowling put the Devils ahead with just his second goal of the season.

However, a high stick call against the host's Dawson Mercer changed the game. The Capitals used the four-minute penalty to their advantage, scoring twice in the powerplay through Connor McMichael and Jakob Chychrun

They extended that lead to 4-2 soon after through another powerplay goal, this time Rasmus Sandin getting in on the act.

The Devils weren't done, however, and reduced the deficit to one at the start of the third period to keep the game in the balance - Stefan Noesen netting in their own powerplay.

The crowd in Newark were smelling blood and their team delivered, putting them level with 16 minutes to play through Jesper Bratt

But, the Capitals had other ideas. Taylor Raddysh netted to put them in front once again before Pierre-Luc Dubois put them two clear soon after.

With time running out, Noesen added his second of the game to make it a tense last three minutes, but the Capitals held on to stay on top of the Eastern Conference in a thriller.
