The National Hockey League (NHL) had five matches on Sunday to finish off the week, with 25 goals scored on the day. Eight of those came in Tampa Bay, where the Vancouver Canucks ran rampant in the third period.

The Canucks, playing on the road against the Lightning, found themselves 2-0 down less than five minutes into the second period. Nikita Kucherov put the hosts in front with 35 seconds left in the opening frame, with Jake Guentzel notching a second four and a half minutes after the restart.

Jake DeBrusk got Vancouver back into the game with a power play goal a few minutes later. The Canucks, who had just 27 shots in the whole game, managed to kill two penalties before the end of the second.

In the final period, the guests scored thrice in the space of 100 seconds. Kiefer Sherwood, Linus Karlsson, and Drew O'Connor did the damage to completely turn the game around.

MacKenzie MacEachern added a fifth later on, before Marcus Pettersson closed the game out with an empty net goal.

In New York, the Detroit Red Wings earned a 2-1 success versus the Rangers. Alex DeBrincat and Mika Zibanejad scored power play goals two minutes apart in the middle of the second, keeping the game level.

The winner came from Lucas Raymond 3:47 before the end of regulation as the Red Wings got their second win in their last three outings. As for the Rangers, their three-game winning streak came to an end as they dropped out of the playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

The Pittsburgh Penguins grabbed their 10th win, all in regulation time, in a 4-0 defeat of the Nashville Predators. Parker Wotherspoon, Evgeni Malkin, and Sidney Crosby gave them a 3-0 lead in the first, before Blake Lizotte added an empty-netter just before the end to round out an impressive performance from the Pens.

There was only one match that required overtime action, with the Minnesota Wild edged the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2. Joel Eriksson put the hosts in front four minutes and 49 seconds in, but the Golden Knights' Pavel Dorofeyev restored parity with less than five minutes before intermission.

Yakov Trenin put the Wild back in the lead with nine minutes in the second, leaving Vegas pressing for another leveller. Outshooting their opponents in the second and third periods, the pressure paid off as Reilly Smith converted another man advantage situation to tie things up with 13:25 left.

In the end, there was no stopping Minnesota on the night, as Kirill Kaprizov scored the winner 10 seconds before the end of overtime. That made it six wins in their last eight for the Wild as they creep up towards the playoff positions.

The final game of the night saw the Colorado Avalanche rally from a early deficit with a pair of quick-fire doubles to beat the New York Islanders 4-1. The home side scored twice in the space of a minute and 19 seconds early in the second, before hitting two in 19 seconds in the final minute of the contest.
