Thusday saw a fair bit of action in the National Hockey League (NHL) as teams are still trying to establish themselves a week into the new season.

Three games went beyond regulation time on the night, with the most drama coming in Montreal. At the Bell Centre, the Canadiens managed a 3-2 success against the Nashville Predators. The Habs were behind twice in the game, conceding midway through the second. Despite tying things up six minutes into the third, the Predators regained their advantage via Nick Perbix.

But, the hosts were not to be denied. With 20 seconds left in regulation, Cole Caufield restored parity in the contest. That forced overtime, where the momentum was firmly with the hosts.

Just as the game seemed like a shootout was on the horizon, Caufield grabbed the winner. The winger netted with three seconds left to give his team their fourth win on the year.

Depending on how results go in the late matches, the Habs could end the night on top of the Eastern Conference.

In Columbus, forward Valeri Nichushkin scored twice for the Colorado Avalanche in their 4-1 comeback win over the Blue Jackets. The guests had 36 shots on net throughout the contest as they go top of the West.

A shootout was required in the Canadian capital between the Ottawa Senators and Seattle Kraken. Dylan Cozens tied the game up with less than two minutes left to leave the home fans jubilant. The Sens made the most of their lifeline, as they scored two of their three attempts in the shootout to win 4-3.

The New Jersey Devils handed the Florida Panthers a third straight defeat in a 3-1 success at home, while a Bo Horvat hat-trick helped the New York Islanders defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2.

An Auston Matthews goal less than a minute into overtime helped the Toronto Maple Leafs get past the New York Rangers 2-1 in an all-Original Six showdown.

Scheifele ties Jets record in win over Flyers

The Winnipeg Jets continued their strong start to the season with a 5-2 defeat of the Philadelphia Flyers. Vladislav Namestnikov put last year's President Trophy winners ahead 5:45 in, before Mark Scheifele added a second after the intermission.

The Flyers got on the board near the end of the frame through Owen Tippett, but let in a third a minute and change later.

Scheifele added a fourth on a power play with 10:20 left in the game. That goal put the centre level on points in Jets' franchise history with Blake Wheeler.

While the home team did add a second with 2:21 to play, Winnipeg iced the game a minute later with an empty netter.

Out in Dallas, the Stars raced to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes against the Vancouver Canucks. Things then went downhill from there, as the guests scored four times in the second to completely flip the match on its head.

Wyatt Johnston halved the deficit with a little over two minutes left, but the Stars could not get the crucial equalizer. Quinn Hughes scored one just before the end to give the Canucks a 5-3 win.
