The 2026 Winter Olympic Games are well and truly underway. On day eight, eight sets of medals will be handed out. At Flashscore, we have picked out three events you shouldn't miss: The men's ski jumping (large hill), Finland vs. Sweden in the Men's ice hockey tournament and the men's giant slalom

Alpine skiing: Men's giant slalom

First run: 11:00 CET - Second run: 12:30 CET

Switzerland's Marco Odermatt has claimed four successive World Cups in this event, but he will head into the competition on the back of a Winter Olympics campaign that so far has been quite disappointing for a man of his ability.

Odermatt finished fourth in the downhill and took the bronze in the super-G, but this won't be enough to satisfy the Swiss skiing ace, who in Milan will attempt to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in giant slalom, a feat that only the Italian Alberto Tomba has achieved before (in Calgary 1988 and Albertville 1992)

Currently ranked second in the World Cup giant slalom standings, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen is posing a significant challenge to Odermatt. Representing Brazil, he is aiming for a historic first-ever Winter Olympic medal for South America, showing incredible speed in the technical events. The Austrian duo of Stefan Brennsteiner & Marco Schwarz will aim to disrupt the Swiss/Brazilian dominance through their vast experience and technical skills on the slope.

Ice Hockey: Sweden - Slovakia

12.10 CET - Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena

Sweden - Slovakia might not sound like the biggest clash in the world of hockey, but judging from these teams' initial performances at the Winter Olympics, this could turn into a crucial clash that will go some way towards deciding the destiny for both countries in this tournament.

Slovakia will head into the tie on the back of their impressive 4-1 opening match win against Finland, which would have taken most hockey experts by surprise. The Slovaks will put most of their faith in 2022 Olympic MVP Juraj Slafkovsky, who has turned into a key player at the age of 21. This squad has sufficient quality to survive the qualification playoffs, but making the final four seems dubious.

Sweden’s potential firepower remains impressive, but apart from Lucas Raymond (Detroit), William Nylander (Toronto), and arguably Mika Zibanejad (New York Rangers), there are only a few Swedish players who are on top of their game right now.

Add that to the fact that Leo Carlsson (Anaheim), who was having an outstanding season on a point-per-game pace, has been ruled out through injury, and the worries for coach Sam Hallam will deepen before a game where the Swedes have their backs to the wall after the hugely disappointing 4-1 defeat against bitter rivals Finland.

The Men's ski jumping (large hill)

18.45 - Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium

Reigning Large Hill World Champion, Ski-Flying World Champion, Four Hills winner, and current World Cup leader Domen Prevc (SLO) will, of course, head into the competition as the hot favourite following his 2025 World Championship title and massive 143.5m training jump.

The biggest challenger to Prev will no doubt be the reigning Olympic champion, Ryoyu Kobayashi, who has been a consistent podium finisher throughout the 2025/26 season and delivered strong performances in the Four Hills Tournament.

The three-time World Champion, Stefan Kraft (AUT), remains a major threat, particularly in large hill events, as a dominant veteran looking for individual Olympic gold.

Germany's Philipp Raimund (GER), who has secured multiple World Cup podiums, will be looking to emulate his feat from the normal hill competition, where he ended up taking the gold medal.

Also, Austria's Jan Hörl, as well as his countryman Daniel Tschofenig, Kapan's Ren Nikaido, and Germany's Andreas Wellinger are expected to play significant roles in the final.
