Mikael Gath will leave his position as coach of the Danish national ice hockey team after this season as he has accepted an offer to coach a club in a big international league, says the Danish ice hockey federation in a press release.

"It has been an incredible journey to lead the Danish national team. Together with the players and staff, we have experienced some fantastic moments and created results that I will always be proud to have been a part of", says Mikael Gath in the press release, where he also focuses on the upcoming World Cup Championship finals in May.

"The World Championships in Switzerland will be a big and important task for us, and my full focus is on gathering the team and preparing ourselves as best as possible for the tournament", he says.

The Danish Ice Hockey Union has not yet found a replacement, but that work starts now, says the federation.

The highlight under Gath's leadership came at the World Championships on home soil in 2025, where Denmark, by beating Canada in the quarter-finals, played its way into a World Championship semi-final, and Gath also managed to qualify Denmark for the Winter Olympics in Milan.

"Mikael has had a great impact on the national team during a period when we have taken important sporting steps. The World Championship semi-final in 2025 and participation in the Olympics in 2026 are results that we are very proud of", says elite manager of the Danish Ice Hockey Federation, Morten Green.
