SS Lazio missed the chance to win back-to-back matches for the first time this season as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by US Cremonese in Serie A.

Only AS Roma’s league games (1.6) had produced a lower total goals average than Lazio’s (1.87) this season prior to kick-off, and it is easy to see why, based on a first half that involved just two shots from both sides, and none on target.

Both Cremonese efforts came from  Federico Bonazzoli, whose first was an audacious lob from distance that flew over, while the second came from closer to the goal, but had the same outcome. Matteo Guendouzi produced Lazio’s best chance, but he too struck over from outside the box.

However, it was not long into the second half when the hosts recorded their first shot on target, yet it was a simple save for Emil Audero as Taty Castellanos headed the ball straight at him from a corner.

Jamie Vardy then had a great chance of his own down the other end, heading over when free at the back post. Bonazzoli was determined to get on the scoresheet, but as he cut inside, he could only drill his shot straight into Ivan Provedel’s grateful arms.

Lazio pushed hardest for a winner in the latter stages, but their poor finishing was summed up as Adam Marusic struck straight at Audero when in a promising position.

As a result, Le Aquile stretch their unbeaten home run to seven games in all competitions, keeping a fifth clean sheet in the process. Nonetheless, they stay in eighth place, while Cremonese remain just two points behind them in 11th, having secured a creditable draw at a tough venue in the Stadio Olimpico.
